O relevo é um importante fator de formação dos solos, condicionando o fluxo de água na paisagem. Com o objetivo de avaliar a influência desse fator sobre a distribuição da matéria orgânica, analisou-se uma toposseqüência de solos localizada no campus da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ. Os seis perfis estudados, Podzólico Vermelho-Amarelo (perfis 1 e 2) localizados no terço superior da encosta, Podzólico Amarelo (perfil 3) situado no terço médio, Planossolo (perfis 4 e 5) no terço inferior e Glei Pouco Húmico (perfil 6) situado ao pé da encosta, apresentaram baixos teores de carbono orgânico total. O fluxo de água condicionou a distribuição das frações da matéria orgânica, principalmente as frações ácidos fúlvicos livres e ácidos fúlvicos. A matéria orgânica apresentou correlação significativa com o valor da cor do solo, com a densidade, porosidade total, conteúdo de Ca2+, K+, Na+, H+, soma de bases e valor T. A via de humificação identificada nos perfis 1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 foi a da insolubilização. No perfil 6, situado ao pé da encosta, a humificação dos compostos orgânicos ocorre pela lenta transformação dos restos vegetais, caracterizando a via de herança como a principal rota de humificação.
