SignificanceIdentifying and explaining regional differences in tropical forest dynamics, structure, diversity, and composition are critical for anticipating region-specific responses to global environmental change. Floristic classifications are of fundamental importance for these efforts. Here we provide a global tropical forest classification that is explicitly based on community evolutionary similarity, resulting in identification of five major tropical forest regions and their relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. African and American forests are grouped, reflecting their former western Gondwanan connection, while Indo-Pacific forests range from eastern Africa and Madagascar to Australia and the Pacific. The connection between northern-hemisphere Asian and American forests is confirmed, while Dry forests are identified as a single tropical biome.

The present study describes the structure, composition and regeneration of tree species in undisturbed and disturbed tropical forests in Bhuban hills in southern Assam, India. The study area is part of one of the globally recognized biodiversity hot spots and in spite of the increasing human activities in these forests, so far no information is available on their impacts on plant assemblages in the area. In each forest, the vegetation was analysed through 50 quadrats (10 m × 10 m) in a belt transect of 500 m × 10 m. A total of 49, 47 and 42 tree species were recorded in disturbed forests and 62, 61 and 60 species in undisturbed forests. The average tree density and basal area were significantly higher in undisturbed forests (708.67 and 42.01 m 2 ha −1 , respectively) than disturbed forests (443.33 and 18.44 m 2 ha −1 , respectively). The population structure of tree species in disturbed forests showed a fluctuating curve, and in undisturbed forests, it was a reversed J-shaped curve. The present study reveals that the species richness, diversity, density and basal area have significantly declined (P < 0.01) due to anthropogenic disturbances. As reflected from the population structure, most of the tree species in disturbed forests showed poor regeneration status. If degradation of these forests continues at the present pace, several of these species which are providing various ecosystem services to the local human communities may disappear in the very near future.

Nitrogen‐fixing Nepalese alder (Alnus nepalensis D. Don.) is a rapidly‐growing pioneer tree species that often forms pure stands in areas affected by landslides, but also occurs mixed with other late‐successional species in the central Himalayas. In this study, we assessed the distribution of carbon in vegetation and soil in a chronosequence of A. nepalensis (3–270 years old) forest stands and evaluated its correlation with the stand and alder total basal area (TBA). The study was conducted in six different naturally occurring forest stands in a chronosequence, viz., alder‐early regenerating (AER), alder‐late regenerating (ALR), alder young‐mixed (AYM), alder mature‐oak (Quercus leucotrichophora) mixed (AMOM), alder mature‐rhododendron (Rhododendron arboreum) mixed (AMR), and alder old‐oak (Q. leucotrichophora) mixed (AOOM) forests. The chronosequence consisted of three young unreserved, AER, ALR, and AYM (age 3–25) and three older reserved, AMOM, AMR, and AOOM (age 80–270) stands. We used structural equation modelling (SEM) to quantify the contribution of various carbon pools on ecosystem carbon stock. Forest carbon stock significantly increased (p < 0.05) with forest age and TBA, indicating that succession is the driving factor of the forest ecosystem processes, carbon accumulation, and therefore, change in vegetation biomass carbon and soil carbon in the chronosequence of A. nepalensis forests. Total vegetation biomass carbon (tree, shrubs, herbs, and litter) contained ~12.54–289.85 Mg ha−1 (79.11–57.77% total carbon stock), and soil carbon (depths of 0–10 cm in AER, 0–30 cm in AYM, 0–100 cm in remaining forest stands) contained ~3.31–210.13 Mg ha−1 (20.8–42% total carbon stock) and positively increased with stand and A. nepalensis TBA. The tree layer biomass carbon stock was considerably higher than the understory (shrubs, herbs, and forest floor). The soil carbon stock was reported to be influenced by the successional stages. Therefore, these findings reflect that the A. nepalensis forest development in the central Himalayas lead to storage of large amount of carbon stock in both plant biomass and soil.

Abstract. This study describes the biomass and net primary productivity of the forests of Central Himalaya occurring in areas where vegetation ranges from close‐canopy broad‐leaved forest to stunted open‐canopy timberline vegetation. The forests studied were Acer cappadocicum forest at 2750 m, Betula utilis forest at 3150 m, and Rhododendron campanulatum forest at 3300 m altitude in Central Himalaya. With the rise in altitude the forest biomass decreased from 308.3 ton/ha in Acer forest to 40.5 ton/ha in Rhododendron forest. The decrease in net primary productivity was less steep, from 19.6 ton/ha/yr in Acer forest to 10.0 ton/ha/yr in Rhododendron forest. The production efficiency of leaves (net production per unit leaf weight) in these forests is higher than in low altitude broad‐leaved forests of Central Himalaya, i.e. from 2.89 in Acer forest to 3.41 g net production/g leaf biomass/yr, against 0.81‐1.55 at lower altitudes.

This study investigated the potential role of a nitrogen-fixing early-coloniser Alnus Nepalensis D. Don (alder) in driving the changes in soil bacterial communities during secondary succession. We found that bacterial diversity was positively associated with alder growth during course of ecosystem development. Alder development elicited multiple changes in bacterial community composition and ecological networks. For example, the initial dominance of actinobacteria within bacterial community transitioned to the dominance of proteobacteria with stand development. Ecological networks approximating species associations tend to stabilize with alder growth. Janthinobacterium lividum, Candidatus Xiphinematobacter and Rhodoplanes were indicator species of different growth stages of alder. While the growth stages of alder has a major independent contribution to the bacterial diversity, its influence on the community composition was explained conjointly by the changes in soil properties with alder. Alder growth increased trace mineral element concentrations in the soil and explained 63% of variance in the Shannon-diversity. We also found positive association of alder with late-successional Quercus leucotrichophora (Oak). Together, the changes in soil bacterial community shaped by early-coloniser alder and its positive association with late-successional oak suggests a crucial role played by alder in ecosystem recovery of degraded habitats.
