This article investigates the self-depicting universe of Alexandre Dumas as published by this author-cum-journalist in his daily, Le Mousquetaire (1853-1857). Much like a kaleidoscope, every page of this periodical distilled the image of its leader, staging him at work or in mundane surroundings, whether with his imaginary cénacle of colleagues and friends or engaging in friendly banter with his public. This mid-19th century literary journal helps us focus on the precise moment in cultural history when celebrity publications took over the promotional role that bookstores used to play for both works and their authors
