The taxonomy of Phyllanthaceae Martinov in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil was updated through the analysis of approximately 200 specimens deposited in regional herbaria as well as field observations. Thirty-five species were recorded, belonging to seven genera: Amanoa Aubl. (1 species), Astrocasia B.L. Rob. & Millsp. (1), Discocarpus Klotzsch (1), Hieronyma Allemão (2), Margaritaria L.f. (1), Phyllanthus L. (28), and Richeria Vahl (1). Of the 35, six are new records for Alagoas State, two for Rio Grande do Norte, four for Paraíba, and six for Sergipe. Among the recorded species, 18 are endemic to Brazil, and of those, 11 are endemic to the Brazilian northeast and nine are exclusive to the Atlantic Forest. An identification key, comments on their taxonomy, phenology and geographic distributions, species conservation status, distribution maps, and illustrations of the species are provided.
During a taxonomic study of Phyllanthaceae in northeastern Brazil, three new occurrences of Phyllanthus were recorded (P. augustini Baill, P. hyssopifolioides Kunth., and P. riedelianus Müll. Arg.), and diagnoses, distribution information, conservation statuses, as well as affinity comments are provided here. Additionally, the rare species Phyllanthus carvalhoi G.L. Webster was collected, which is endemic to the Atlantic Forest in Bahia State, and we provide an updated morphological description, conservation status, photographs, and unpublished illustrations.
CONSERVATION OF 'KUMAGAI' AND 'PEDRO SATO' GUAVAS MINIMALLY PROCESSEDABSTRACT -The minimal processing allows obtaining products with high quality, freshness and great convenience to the consumer. In order to evaluate the use of white and red pulp guavas fruits together as a way to become more attractive and nutritional, the effect of types of cut and storage temperatures in guavas 'Kumagai' and 'Pedro Sato' minimally processed was evaluated. The fruits had been minimally processed in slice wheel and slices, packed in polystyrene trays, re-covered with PVC 17µm film and stored at 5 and 15ºC during 9 days. The analyses had been carried out each 3 days to determine the physical-chemical characteristics (mesocarp and pulp firmness, skin and pulp color, soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid) and the appearance. The temperature and types of cut did not influence the ascorbic acid, soluble solids and titratable acidity contents. Slice wheel had promoted the high firmness for mesocarp and pulp. The skin color was preserved at 5ºC, however the slice cut and at 15ºC provided the browning of the fruits. The product minimally processed at 5ºC, as well as the cut in slice wheel, had been preferred by the tasters.
Angiosperm species growing in a fragment of Lowland Semideciduous Seasonal Forest in the Tapacurá Ecological Station (TES) in Pernambuco State (Brazil) were surveyed. Botanical collections to compose a species list were undertaken and these species identified by comparisons with specimens deposited in the HST, PEUFR and IPA herbaria, in addition to online database queries. A total of 479 species were identified, belonging to 81 families and 285 genera. The families with the largest numbers of species were Fabaceae (68), Rubiaceae (25), Malvaceae (20), Myrtaceae (20), Cyperaceae (19), Poaceae (19), Bromeliaceae (18), Euphorbiaceae (17), Asteraceae (16), and Sapindaceae (14), which together accounted for 49.27% of the total number of species. Great similarity was observed between our results and surveys of other lowland forests in northeastern Brazil, with the families Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, and Myrtaceae having the greatest species richness. This study added 44 new occurrences for Pernambuco State, demonstrating the richness and abundance of TES taxa and the importance of their conservation to the regional flora.
