Soil microbes may affect the way exotic invasive plants interact with native neighbors. We investigated the effects of soil fungi on interactions between the invasive weed Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed) and six species native to the intermountain prairies of the northwestern United States. We also compared the effect of C. maculosa on the composition of the soil microbial community to that of the native species. In the field, fungicide (Benomyl) reduced AM mycorrhizal colonization of C. maculosa roots by >80%. Fungicide did not significantly reduce non‐AM fungi. When grown alone, the biomass of C. maculosa was not affected by the fungicide application. However, depending on the combination of native competitor and fungicide, C. maculosa biomass varied from 10‐fold decreases to 1.9‐fold increases. In untreated soils, C. maculosa grew larger in the presence of Festuca idahoensis or Koeleria cristata than when alone. When fungicide was applied these positive effects of Festuca and Koeleria on C. maculosa did not occur. A third native grass, Pseudoroegneria spicata, had much stronger competitive effects on C. maculosa than Festuca or Koeleria, and fungicide reduced the competitive effects of Pseudoroegneria. Fungicide increased Centaurea biomass when competing with the forb Gallardia aristata. However, fungicide did not affect the way two other forbs; Achillea millefolium and Linum lewisii, interacted with C. maculosa. Rhizosphere microbial communities in the root zones of the three native bunchgrass species differed from that of C. maculosa. However, despite the strong effects of soil fungi in field interactions and differences in microbial community composition, soil biota from different plant rhizospheres did not affect the growth of C. maculosa in the absence of native competitors in greenhouse experiments. Our results suggest that successful invasions by exotic plant species can be affected by complex and often beneficial effects of local soil microbial communities. These effects were not manifest as simple direct effects, but become apparent only when native plants, invasive plants, and soil microbial communities were interacting at the same time.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509819611Diferentes intereses industriales, energéticos y ambientales han motivado el análisis de las distintas posibilidades de aprovechamiento de la biomasa forestal, este tema está adquiriendo un creciente protagonismo, por lo que la cuantificación de la biomasa aérea de estos sistemas forestales constituye un primer paso fundamental e ineludible. El objetivo de este trabajo fue desarrollar modelos que permitan estimar la biomasa de los diferentes compartimentos aéreos de Eucalyptus grandis. Para ello se emplearon datos de 41 árboles provenientes de rodales de diferentes edades, entre 4 y 32 años, ubicados en la región NE de Argentina. Se tomaron 23 individuos ubicados en la Zona Norte y Alta de Misiones (zona 1) y 18 en el Sur de Misiones y NE de Corrientes (zona 2). Se determinó la biomasa de hojas, ramas menores a 5 cm, ramas mayores a 5 cm, total de ramas, fuste y biomasa total del árbol. Para el ajuste de modelos se tomaron diversas variables independientes, el diámetro a la altura de pecho (dap), la altura total del árbol (h), el producto (dap2*h) y la variable “dummy” (zona). Para el caso de la biomasa de ramas y de hojas, debido a que no se lograron resultados satisfactorios con el empleo de estas variables, se examinaron modelos que adicionaban índice de sitio, factor de espaciamiento, diámetro en la base de la copa verde (dbcv), altura hasta la base de la copa verde (hbcv), longitud de copa verde (lcv), el área transversal de albura en la base de copa verde (g Alb bcv) y diferentes combinaciones de estas variables. Los modelos fueron seleccionados en base al coeficiente de determinación y el error cuadrático medio. Para la biomasa de ramas menores a 5 cm, ramas mayores a 5 cm, total de ramas, fuste y total, los mejores modelos fueron los que incorporaron como variables regresoras, el diámetro a la altura de pecho, la altura total del árbol y la variable “dummy” (zona). Para la biomasa de hojas, las variables, edad, área basal y número de árboles por hectárea permitieron mejorar la estimación. Los coeficientes de determinación para los modelos de biomasa total y de fuste fueron de 0,99, para el total de ramas fue de 0,83, para ramas menores a 5 cm 0,69, para ramas mayores de 5 cm 0,53 y 0,65 para hojas. Se recomienda incrementar la base de datos a los efectos de intentar mejorar las predicciones de biomasa de hojas y ramas.

Le commerce de la yerba maté, Ilex paraguariensis Saint-Hilaire, est un négoce lucratif en Argentine, au Paraguay et au Brésil. Ses feuilles sont consommées comme du thé avec un marché en croissance aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Asie, car elles contiennent des antioxydants, sont énergisantes et constituent ainsi une alternative au café. Environ 5% de la superficie de la province de Misiones en Argentine sont consacrés à la production de la yerba maté. Beaucoup de paysans n'atteignent pas les rendements escomptés faute de techniques appropriées. La yerba maté en culture organique (sans intrants agrochimiques) peut atteindre un prix plus élevé pour les coopératives qui en font un de leurs produits. Tradition nel lement gérée en monoculture, son exploitation peut entraîner l'érosion et l'épuisement des sols. Toutefois, la yerba maté pousse en forêt subtropicale et tolère l'ombrage ce qui permet de la cultiver dans des systèmes agroforestiers (SAF). Cette étude examine les SAF avec la yerba maté en culture organique à l'aide d'interviews semi-structurées auprès des paysans de la province de Misiones, y compris les fermes familiales, les grandes fermes, les compagnies privées et les réserves. Un grand nombre d'espèces naturelles poussant en association avec la yerba maté ont été identifiées. Le travail supplémentaire requis par les pratiques de la culture organique est compensé par un meilleur prix de vente. Les SAF, associant yerba mate et arbres, améliorent la fertilité des sols sans recourir aux fertilisants tout en procurant des revenus supplémen-taires. Towards the end of 2021 and during the first two months of 2022 a heat wave hit the northeast of Argentina, part of southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, after a prolonged drought. The effects were catastrophic for agriculture, biodiversity, and the local economy. Extreme climate events have become globally more common, and this fact has helped create a higher level of public awareness about global warming. All climate adaptation and mitigation strategies with a potential to have global impact are worth disseminating and discussing. For over two decades and a half we have committed heavily in the creation of the integrated agroforestry system we document here. The creation and continued leveraging of the system provide an example that it is possible to recover biodiversity and ecosystem services on lands previously eroded due to highly extractive exploitation without appropriate replenishment. Collaborations with public extension agencies have helped in capacity building and public outreach to show how an economic activity can be strengthen by the recovery of natural complexity. We believe that our project and similar ones should be one type of strategy in the toolkit for meeting the 2030 biodiversity targets, e.g., as discussed in the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 15) Global Biodiversity Framework. This Framework must try to give the world the toolkit to enable the 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature, achieving transformative change across our societies and putting nature on a path to recovery by 2030.
