<p>Este artigo analisa a peça Mutirão em Novo Sol escrita em 1961 no ambiente do Teatro Arena, assim como o histórico de suas montagens entre 1961 e 1963. Embora esquecida por mais de meio século, a peça foi marcante para o teatro engajado dos anos anteriores ao Golpe Militar de 1964 tanto por protagonizar experiências avançadas na cena como pela inovadora tentativa de composição épica na dramaturgia.</p>
O artigo analisou aspectos de duas versões gravadas da marchinha Yes, nós temos bananas, composta por Braguinha e Alberto Ribeiro. A canção foi lançada em janeiro de 1938, na Revista Teatral Carnavalesca de mesmo nome, no Rio de Janeiro – e foi parte decisiva de sua estrutura. Pouco depois, Almirante a gravaria pela Odeon. A canção foi retomada em 1967, na peça O rei da vela, encenada pelo Teatro Oficina, e em maio de 1968 foi gravada por Caetano Veloso, pela Phillips, com arranjo de Rogério Duprat. A análise conjunta dessas versões, de seu ambiente teatral e de seus prováveis diálogos históricos permitiu observar certas continuidades nas maneiras como a cultura lidou com os ciclos de modernização no Brasil no século XX.
Com o trabalho investiga-se o Teatro Paulista do Estudante (TPE), fundado por Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, Oduvaldo Vianna Filho e Vera Gerteldentre outros, desde sua criação em 1955 até sua fusão com o Teatro de Arena em 1956. Identifica-se ali o início de um projeto nacional popular que influiria decisivamente em todo teatro político posterior, como a fase engajada do Arena e o Centro Popular de Cultura (CPC), até 1964. A pesquisa buscou constituir e analisar as produções artísticas e teóricas do Teatro Paulista do Estudante, bem como os impasses decorrentes de sua prática.Observou-se o TPE à luz, principalmente, das influências do encenador italiano Ruggero Jacobbi; de uma tradição de grupos amadores de intenções populares na década de 1950; e do engajamento ligado ao Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB).
