Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão is a plant utilized in Northeast Brazil as an antiinflammatory, wound healing and in gynecological illnesses. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the antiinflammatory and antiulcer properties of the tannin-enriched fraction (TEF) isolated from the stem bark of M. urundeuva, in the formalin test, in mice, and in carrageenan-induced paw edema and gastric ulcer models, in rats. The results showed that TEF dose-dependently inhibited both phases of the formalin test. However, the effect was predominant in the 2nd phase of the response where inhibitions of 47%, 76% and 85% were observed, with doses of 5, 10 and 50 mg/kg, i.p. In the carrageenan-induced paw edema, significant inhibitions were observed at 3 h (44%) and 4 h (28%), with a dose of 10 mg/kg, i.p. TEF also significantly decreased by 37%, 43% and 57% gastric ulceration induced by indomethacin, at doses of 10, 20 and 50 mg/kg p.o. In the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model, TEF was less effective, and significant inhibitions (42% to 46%) were observed only with doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. In conclusion, it was shown that TEF presents antiinflammatory and antiulcer effects, partly due to its antioxidant action, known to be present in polyphenols, including tannins.

Endophytic fungi are a promising source for discovery of compounds with biotechnological potential. The aim of this study was to select and identify endophytic fungi from Coffea arabica that produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs), evaluate the effect of the VOCs produced by endophytic fungi on the growth of Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Phoma sp., Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium solani, Fusarium verticillioides, Cercospora coffeicola and Pestalotia longisetula, and select endophytic fungi with potential for biological control of Aspergillus ochraceus inoculated in coffee beans and F. verticillioides inoculated in corn seeds. An isolate of Muscodor albus was used as selection tool for VOC producing fungi. Among the 400 endophytic fungi isolates, 11 were able to grow in the presence of VOCs produced by M. albus. These fungi were identified as Muscodor spp. (9) and Simplicillium sp. according to searches in UNITE database using DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS). The VOC's produced by endophytic fungi inhibited the growth the phytopathogenic fungi with different efficacies, compared to the control. The VOCs produced by Muscodor coffeanum (COAD 1842) showed fungicidal effect against A. ochraceus on coffee beans. Six endophytic fungi completely inhibited growth of F. verticillioides inoculated in corn seeds. This study demonstrates that the volatile-compound producing endophytic fungi, isolated from Coffea arabica, are promising sources of bioactive compounds.
ABSTRACTThe objective of this work was to evaluate the "in vitro" effect of essential oils of garlic (Allium sativum L.), cinnamon (Cinnmomum burnannil Meissn), clove (Caryophillus aromaticus L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) condiments that were added to culture media (PDA and CYA 20S). The essential oils were extracted by utilizing the vapor "dragging" technique and tested in the concentrations of 500; 1000; 1500 and 2000 µg/mL, exept clove, which was tested in concentrations of 200, 400, 600 and 800 µg/mL. The fungi Rhizopus sp., Penicillium spp., Eurotium repens and Aspergillus niger, isolated of breads discarded for consumption. The cinnamon essential oil inhibited completely the tested fungi development. The thyme and garlic oils presented a pronounced effect at the higher concentrations. The essencial oil of clove inhibited the growth of Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus sp. and Eurotium repens at concetrations above 600 µg/mL and of Penicillium above 800 µg/mL.
GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES IN AN ASSOCIATION OF FAMILIAR COFFEE PRODUCERS BY MEANS OF CLUSTERS ANALYSIS
The drying of coffee by means of fixed layer dryers has been widely used by Brazilian coffee growers. However, high gradients of water content formed in these dryers are frequently reported, as well as the presence of microorganisms. The present work was developed with the purpose of monitoring the performance of these dryers and their effect on the final quality of the product, comparing to an adaptation made in conventional fixed layer dryers. During drying, the following characteristics were monitored at various points in the drying chamber: temperature of drying air, intergranular air, exhaust air, and ambient air; relative humidity of the drying air, the ambient air, and the exhaust air and the water content of the product at different points and heights in the drying chamber (0.12; 0.36 and 0.60 m). Among the dry product evaluations, color analysis and microbiological analysis were performed. According to the results obtained, drying with inversion of the airflow resulted in a water content gradient of 0.4% (b.u.), while conventional drying caused a gradient of 8% (b.u.). Regarding the color of the product in the different drying managements, drying with airflow inversion resulted in lighter products. For the microbiological analysis, fungi of the genera Cladosporium, Fusarium, and Aspergillus were found, among others. The average incidence of these fungi was higher in conventional drying samples than in fixed layer drying with inversion of airflow.
TERMOS PARA INDEXAÇÃO:Ocratoxina A, café, Aspergillus ochraceus, qualidade. IMPLICATIONS OF Aspergillus niger var. niger's MOLD, FUNGI UPON GROWING Aspergillus's ISOLATE OF SECTIONCircumdati AND OCHRATOXIN A ABSTRACT -The present study evaluated the inhibitory effect of the fungus Aspergillus niger var. niger EcoCentro 1181T-01 (inhibitor) and its filtrate on the growth of an Aspergillus isolate of the section Circumdati and ochratoxin A (OTA) production. An atoxigenic isolate of the inhibitor fungus screened as possible antagonist for toxigenic species of the genus Aspergillus, section Circumdati, showed a positive inhibitory effect upon mycelial growth velocity indices comparing with the isolates tested. The antagonistic action of the inhibitor fungus associated with coffee beans may be one of the factors responsible for the reduced levels of OTA detected in the samples analyzed.
