El uso del registro EEG continuo en el paciente con alteración del estado de conciencia, convulsiones, estado epiléptico convulsivo y no convulsivo se ha incrementado en los últimos años, porque permite obtener información en tiempo real de la función cerebral, muestra los cambios en el tiempo, facilita la identificación de crisis epilépticas subclínicas y electrográficas; en éstas últimas, de gran importancia debido a que no presentan correlación clínica. Los hallazgos durante el monitoreo permiten la modificación del tratamiento farmacológico y anticonvulsivo. Para el clínico son una gran ventaja en la toma de decisiones oportunas que redunden en mejorar el pronóstico del paciente.
