This study aims at finding out whether or not there's an impact on students' anxiety on their speaking performance. In addition, it also has an aim to identify factors relate to students' reluctance that can hinder their oral performance. Observation, interview, and questionnaire have been used to collect the data which has then been analyzed in a qualitative way. 25 students of the second semester of English Department Universitas Nusa Cendana Indonesia have been selected as the subject of this research. Based on the findings and analysis, it can be revealed that students' anxiety definitely has an impact on their speaking performance and this becomes one of the reasons why they find it difficult to express themselves in English. Many factors have been identified but only those which have been considered as the main ones are presented in this writing to answer the question of why the students have been reluctant in their oral performance. Knowing that their oral performance was severely hampered by the above-mentioned factors, several solutions have been recommended to make them easy to cope with their anxiety.
This qualitative study basically aims to produce a review or assessment and reflection on language (i.e. English) ability and attitudes shown by local communities in 10 tourist spots in NTT Province. The data has been collected by using both direct observations and interviews. The results show that most of local people aren't really aware of the importance of having positive attitudes towards visitors/tourists. They also have constraints in communicating with the visitors/tourists because they can't speak English well. There have also been other problems listed down in this article as the findings of this study. All these problems can cause discomfort for travelers who come to visit. These language and attitude aspects are still considered as small problems but they have a major impact on the development of tourism in NTT.
Abstract. This is a case study of teaching and learning using bilingual instruction in two schools of Early Childhood Education in Kupang-NTT, Indonesia. The aims of this study are to find out whether or not bilingual instruction in Early Childhood Education can better develop children (the outcomes) and if the issue of 'the younger, the better" in children's language acquisition in bilingual setting is acceptable and true. 4 students from one bilingual and one monolingual schools have been observed. In addition, parents and teachers of these students have also been interviewed. The data has then been analyzed qualitatively to come to the answers of the proposed questions, and the results reveal that bilingual instruction alone does not necessarily create better children unless it is supported by other factors, such as encouraging parents, professional teachers, and supporting environment. This is in a line with the findings of the issue about 'the younger, the better' in children's language acquisition, that the younger does not always mean the better. Other aforementioned factors are needed in the development of children's language acquisition. It's recommended that all parties involved in children's development can take part in developing their skills, knowledge as well as characters.
