Summary: This article reports on the dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of thermosetting phenylethynyl‐terminated polyimide (PETI‐5) composites reinforced with expanded graphite (EG) nanoplatelets having various average particle sizes and content. The EG nanoplatelets with varying particle sizes were prepared by different pulverization techniques through intercalation and exfoliation of natural graphite flakes. The effect of the EG particle size and concentration of the thermal behavior of PETI‐5/EG composites was investigated with several thermal analysis methods (DMA, TMA, and DSC). The storage modulus dynamic mechanical properties and glass transition temperature significantly increased with increasing concentration of EG nanoreinforcements regardless of size. Rapid progress in two-dimensional (2D) crystalline materials has recently enabled a range of device possibilities. These possibilities may be further expanded through the development of advanced 2D glass materials. Zachariasen carbon monolayer, a novel amorphous 2D carbon allotrope, was successfully synthesized on germanium surface. The one-atom-thick continuous amorphous layer, in which the in-plane carbon network was fully sp 2 -hybridized, was achieved at high temperatures (>900°C) and a controlled growth rate. We verified that the charge carriers within the Zachariasen carbon monolayer are strongly localized to display Anderson insulating behavior and a large negative magnetoresistance. This new 2D glass also exhibited a unique ability as an atom-thick interface layer, allowing the deposition of an atomically flat dielectric film. It can be adopted in conventional semiconductor and display processing or used in the fabrication of flexible devices consisting of thin inorganic layers.

Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks have demonstrated high optical and electrical properties, even better than those of indium tin oxide thin films, and are expected to be a next-generation transparent conducting electrode (TCE). Enhanced electrical and optical properties are achieved when the diameter of the AgNWs in the network is fairly small, that is, typically less than 30 nm. However, when AgNWs with such small diameters are used in the network, stability issues arise. One method to resolve the stability issues is to increase the diameter of the AgNWs, but the use of AgNWs with large diameters has the disadvantage of causing a rough surface morphology. In this work, we resolve all of the aforementioned issues with AgNW TCEs by the electrodeposition of Ag onto as-spin-coated thin AgNW TCEs. The electrodeposition of Ag offers many advantages, including the precise adjustment of the AgNW diameter and wire-to-wire welding to improve the junction conductance while minimizing the increase in protrusion height because of the overlap of AgNWs upon increasing the diameter. In addition, Ag electrodeposition on AgNW TCEs can provide higher conductance than that of as-spin-coated AgNW TCEs at the same transparency because of the reduced junction resistance, which generates a superior figure of merit. We applied the electrodeposited (ED) AgNW network to a Cu­(In,Ga)­Se2 thin-film solar cell and compared the device performance to a device with a standard sputtered transparent conducting oxide (TCO). The cell fabricated by the electrodeposition method showed nearly equal performance to that of a cell with the sputtered TCO. We expect that ED AgNW networks can be used as high-performance and robust TCEs for various optoelectronic applications.

Ambient NO2 adsorption onto copper(II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) monolayers is observed using ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to elucidate the molecular sensing mechanism in CuPc chemical vapor sensors. For low doses (1 ppm for 5 min) of NO2 at ambient temperatures, isolated chemisorption sites on the CuPc metal centers are observed in STM images. These chemisorbates almost completely desorb from the CuPc monolayer after annealing at 100 °C for 30 min. Conversely, for high NO2 doses (10 ppm for 5 min), the NO2 induces a fracture of the CuPc domains. This domain fracture can only be reversed by annealing above 150 °C, which is consistent with dissociative chemisorption into NO and atomic O accompanied by surface restructuring. This high stability implies that the domain fracture results from tightly bound adsorbates, such as atomic O. Existence of atomic O on or under the CuPc layer, which results in domain fracture, is revealed by XPS analysis and ozone-dosing experiments. The observed CuPc domain fracturing is consistent with a mechanism for the dosimetric sensing of NO2 and other reactive gases by CuPc organic thin film transistors (OTFTs).
