Estudos sugerem que o abuso do álcool pode acarretar alterações cognitivas, que comprometam intimamente a linguagem. Este trabalho busca investigar o desempenho de indivíduos alcoólicos em habilidades linguísticas, a fim de esclarecer as manifestações encontradas após abuso excessivo de álcool, em relação à compreensão, memória, funções atencionais e funções executivas. Os resultados mostraram que o desempenho dos alcoólicos foi significativamente menor que as médias de normalidade, acarretando alterações de memória operacional, atenção, memória semântica e processamento metalingüístico. Desta forma, pudemos concluir que o uso prolongado do álcool pode comprometer funções cognitivas, que influenciam diretamente a linguagem.
