In the past few decades, the concept of corporate social responsibility has been at the centre of interest in many areas of economic research, studies using different levels of analysis. This paper analyses corporate social responsibility at the level of organisation within the banking system, where the issue of corporate social responsibility disclosure comes under the spotlight with the emergence of the global economic crisis. The purpose of the study is twofold: to examine whether Croatian banks' online corporate social responsibility reporting depends upon their market share, and whether it focuses on community related information. Using website content analysis of all twenty-eight banks currently operating in the Croatian banking sector, corporate social responsibility disclosure is categorised in terms of themes (environment, human resources, customers and products, and community involvement). The research findings reveal that the level of Croatian banks' online CSR disclosure is largely dependent on banks' market share. On the other hand, results indicate that Croatian banks are mainly reporting on activities related to customers and products, followed by those, which imply community involvement. Human resources and environmental initiatives receive the least amount of attention. The results of the study can be used to more deeply comprehend and understand banks' corporate social responsibility as a business philosophy that contributes to organisational performance and building trust between market participants.
Authentic leadership is a positive leadership theory, conceptualized under the influence of positive psychology and positive organizational behaviour movement. Although it has become a recognized leadership theory, it is still somewhat neglected in the hospitality literature. To address this gap, the paper seeks to develop and test a conceptual model linking authentic leadership to organizational performance in the hospitality context. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical multiple regression analysis on a sample of 226 employees from 24 hotels in Croatia. The research results confirmed the positive impact of authentic leadership on hotels’ operational performance, which was mediated by followers’ job satisfaction and performance. There was no empirical support for the hypothesized impact of authentic leadership on hotels’ financial performance. The findings suggest that authentic leadership behaviours, together with positive organisational settings, characterized by flexible organizational structure, are more likely to enhance desirable employees’ attitudes and behaviours, resulting in improved organizational performance.
Psychological capital is a focal component of authentic leadership theory. The importance and growing popularity of psychological capital stem from its positive effect on desirable employee work-related attitudes and behaviors, which is particularly pronounced in the service industries. However, empirical research on the relationship between authentic leadership and psychological capital in the hospitality industry is scarce. In order to fulfil this gap in the literature, the present study investigates the influence of authentic leadership on hotel employees' psychological capital, additionally examining the moderating role of organizational structure. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical multiple regression analysis on a sample of 226 employees from 24 hotels in Croatia. The findings confirmed that managers who demonstrate authentic leadership behaviors are able to positively impact hotel employees' psychological capacities of hope, optimism, resilience and self-efficacy. However, there was no empirical evidence to support the hypothesized moderation effect of organic organizational structures in the said relationship.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess competitiveness of private accommodation, and to offer the necessary measures which would improve the quality of this segment of tourism that would later provide additional opportunities for the creation of a new market position as well as increasing quality of life and standard of local population. Design and methodology – A study of attitudes and opinions of private accommodation providers was conducted, in conjunction with assessing the current state and possibilities of further development of this sector. The study was carried out from January to June 2012 in Primorsko-goranska County. A questionnaire survey was used for gathering data and a specially structured questionnaire consisting of three parts was formed. For the purposes of this paper, the first two parts of the questionnaire were analysed in detail. A total of 432 questionnaires were found usable for the study. The collected data analysis included descriptive statistics. Approach – The special focus is given to obtaining relevant results by using comparative analysis with the findings of previously conducted researches of private accommodation in Primorskogoranska County. Findings – The research results indicate the changes in the demographic structure of the private accommodation providers, their motives for the provision of accommodation in the households as well as total revenues from the provision of accommodation services in the households. Qualitative shifts in the structure of accommodation capacity are also identified. Specifically, socio-demographic changes include: increasing the share of younger and highly-educated private accommodation providers. Significant increase is noticeable in the number of private accommodation providers whose basic motive of providing services is connected with increasing the basic household income. The increase in total revenue from the provision of accommodation services in the household is also evident. Research results which are related to changes in the type and form of accommodation, suggest a qualitative shift in terms of reducing the number of rooms and suites, and increasing number of holiday homes as a form of quality accommodation in the households. Originality of research – Since there has not been any systematic research conducted on private accommodation, this research opens enough space for further theoretical and applicative improvement. Special emphasis is put on the importance of raising the level of quality and restructuring of private accommodation.
