The new 30 km Cadangan Projek Jambatan Temburong (Temburong Bridge Project) in Brunei will connect the relatively isolated district of Temburong with the more developed Brunei-Muara district. The project includes approximately 12 km of low level piled slab viaduct structure crossing a peat swamp forest in the Temburong District (CC4 Contract).

The peat swamp forest has unique and endangered flora and fauna. The soil conditions consist of soft peat overlying soft marine clay with depths exceeding 70m. In order to permit a fast track construction method with minimal disturbance to the environment, the design required a simple yet innovative solution.

This paper describes the design of the viaducts, focusing on the development, decisions and details adopted to aid the construction method.

Temburong district has been physically isolated from the rest of Brunei which has hindered the economic growth of the district. A sea-crossing is planned to link the district to Brunei-Muara. A feasibility study was carried out between 2010 and 2012 to establish the alignment and preliminary design of the link, assess the project impacts and analyse the costs and benefits.

The Temburong Bridge Project is a 30km long dual two-lane highway crossing over the Brunei Bay. It will connect the relatively isolated Brunei district of Temburong to the other three Brunei districts. The main objective of the project is to stimulate economic growth in the Temburong region by connecting it to the country’s airport and ports. The alignment crosses two navigation channels resulting in the need for two cable stayed bridges – the Brunei Channel Bridge (145m main span) and the Eastern Channel Bridge (260m main span).

The design of these cable stayed bridges is one of the first applications of the Eurocode to a fully concrete cable stayed bridge. Both cable stayed bridges draw on strong Islamic architectural influences from the region to form a tower shape that is unique and instantly recognisable.

Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB) in the Philippines is a proposed 32km sea-crossing which will connect Bataan and Cavite provinces, to unlock opportunity for economic growth and expansion outside Metro Manila. A Feasibility Study was carried out to plan the road link, which will involve two major navigation bridges, long marine viaducts, and interchange connections. This paper outlines the Feasibility Study, the navigation clearance study and the Preliminary Design of the crossing. It highlights how the navigation clearances were assessed and confirmed, and how the bridge options were evaluated in order to come up with an optimum solution.
