Cuando se propone una zona como área natural protegida, por lo general la información que fundamenta la propuesta se basa más en el entorno biofísico, que en el contexto social y de gestión de sus recursos naturales. El presente trabajo se realizó durante mayo 2004 a junio 2005, con el propósito de analizar el proceso de aprovechamiento del laurel silvestre (Litsea glaucescens Kunth), una especie protegida, en “Sierra del Laurel”, considerada como una de las áreas prioritarias para la conservación en el estado de Aguascalientes. Se aplicaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a recolectores locales y habitantes de la región, con el fin de conocer las tendencias de aprovechamiento del recurso; se entrevistó a funcionarios de instituciones ambientales estatales y federales para conocer su postura frente al aprovechamiento de la especie, y se realizó un taller participativo con productores y recolectores para documentar su opinión sobre el estado que guarda la población del laurel silvestre. Las tendencias de aprovechamiento de la especie la han llevado a estar en peligro de extinción, ya que no existe una organización entre los recolectores, ni esquemas de aprovechamiento legales que permitan su regeneración. La falta de coordinación institucional ha contribuido a que los usuarios del recurso no tengan procedimientos adecuados de gestión, debido a la aplicación ineficiente de las leyes e instrumentos jurídicos para el manejo de los recursos naturales.
De acuerdo con un estudio etnozoológico sobre el aprovechamiento de vertebrados silvestres en 11 comunidades Mayo-Yoreme del municipio de El Fuerte, Sinaloa, México, los reptiles fueron el tercer grupo el grupo de la etnofauna local más utilizados después de las aves y los mamíferos. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo caracterizar y describir el uso de reptiles silvestres por Yoremes y Yoris (mestizos). El 58% de los usufructuarios se reconocieron como Yoremes, en tanto que el resto fueron Yoris. Se registraron nueve especies de reptiles, de las cuales el 44% se encuentran en alguna categoría de riesgo. Cada cazador reconoció cazar entre una y tres especies, que aprovecha hasta para tres formas de uso, siendo los más frecuentes el alimentario, medicinal y artesanal. Las especies más importantes fueron el de la serpiente de cascabel, la iguana verde y la iguana negra, aunque se encontró evidencia de uso alimentario de la tortuga de río, y en menor medida, de la tortuga golfína que está en peligro de extinción. El conocimiento de las especies de reptiles cazadas y sus usos permitirá dar un paso más hacia la gestión de los aprovechamientos culturales y de subsistencia en las comunidades indígenas del norte de Sinaloa.
El aprovechamiento sostenible del venado cola blanca en México se realiza en las Unidades de Manejo para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre (UMA), con base en un plan de manejo para su operación legal. Entre los métodos de estimación poblacional para obtener tasas de aprovechamiento, destaca el recuento de grupos fecales, dependiente de la frecuencia con que un venado defeca al día, y cuyos valores se han estimado a partir de ejemplares cautivos y tolerantes al observador, pero considerando subespecies y condiciones distintas a las del norte de Sinaloa. El uso de esas tasas de defecación puede dar lugar al aprovechamiento excesivo. Esta investigación se realizó en el venadario del ejido Mayo- Yoreme de Los Capomos, municipio de El Fuerte, Sinaloa, entre octubre de 2011 y mayo de 2012, con el objetivo de estimar de manera inversa una tasa de defecación a partir de recuentos de grupos fecales obtenidos de una población confinada y en aparente equilibrio con su entorno, mediante ajustes al modelo de Eberhardt y Van Etten. Se encontró que con la tasa de defecación más baja publicada (12.7 grupos fecales por venado al día), la población estimada representó la mitad de la población conocida, lo que permitiría evitar un aprovechamiento excesivo del venado nativo en vida libre. Sin embargo, el patrón de agrupamiento aleatorio de las excretas en el encierro, hace recomendable que éste sea analizado en condiciones de libertad, ya que el modelo utilizado presupone patrones de agrupamiento agregados.
Se realizaron cuatro inventarios participativos de mamíferossilvestres mediante el uso de cámaras-trampa en el ejido SanIgnacio y sus anexos, municipio de Morelos, Chihuahua, en un áreade bosque templado con predominio de pinos, y en menor proporción bosques de encino-pino. Se registraron visitas individuales en video por cada especie en períodos de 24 horas, considerando cuatro temporadas de muestreo, durante las épocas de sequía y lluvias de 2013 y 2014. En total, se obtuvieron 2,027 registros de video, de los cuales 1,456 fueron efectivos para mamíferos silvestres, con un esfuerzo de muestreo de 426 días-trampa. Se registraron 10 especies repartidas entre nueve familias y cinco órdenes, y la mitad de ellas están enlistadas en la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres (CITES, por sus siglas en inglés). La primavera 2013 fue la temporada con mayor riqueza de especies. Las especies más abundantes fueron el venado cola blanca, el jabalí de collar y el coatí. La mayor abundancia de mamíferos se registró en sitios con bosque de encino-pino. El involucramiento y participación de los ejidatarios en el inventario, ha favorecido la toma de concienciasobre la importancia de su patrimonio zoocultural, y la necesidad desu conservación. La información generada servirá de base en la elaboración de programas de manejo autogestivos, para la regulación de los aprovechamientos de mamíferos silvestres con fines de subsistencia por los pobladores del ejido.
