La calidad de la semilla es un concepto agronómico que considera atributos físicos, fisiológicos, genéticos y sanitarios; los cuales permiten un establecimiento adecuado del cultivo para lograr buena productividad óptima. Alrededor de 95% del trigo cultivado por la humanidad es trigo harinero, producto obtenido por los programas de mejoramiento genético alrededor del mundo. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las características de calidad física de 24 variedades de trigo provenientes de la colección del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias. La semilla de las variedades para el análisis de calidad se incrementó en condiciones de campo durante dos ciclos. El diseño experimental empleado fue bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. En la evaluación se agruparon las variedades en ocho décadas de acuerdo con el año de liberación y se analizaron los datos de dos formas, por variedades y años y por décadas. Se evaluaron tres variables y los resultados indican que para peso de mil semillas se aumentó hasta en 30% su valor en variedades modernas; mientras que para peso volumétrico fue de 7%, para porcentaje de humedad no se detectó diferencia entre las variedades generadas en las diferentes décadas. Las 24 variedades evaluadas tuvieron un comportamiento aceptable bajo los estándares que la industria semillera demanda. Se concluye que el mejoramiento genético de trigo en México ha influenciado de manera positiva y de forma significativa en el peso de mil semillas.
La roya amarilla, causada por el hongo Puccinia striiformis W., sigue siendo una enfermedad importante del trigo en la región de El Bajío, el Noroeste de México y en los Valles Altos del centro de México. Durante el ciclo 2014 se observó una epidemia de roya amarilla del trigo en los Valles Altos de México, de donde se tomaron muestras y se analizaron en líneas diferenciales en invernadero. Los resultados indicaron que las combinaciones de virulencia de Yr1, Yr2, Yr3, Yr6, Yr7, Yr8, Yr9, Yr17, Yr27 y Yr31 fueron identificadas por primera vez en México. Estas combinaciones estuvieron representadas por las razas MEX14.122, MEX 14.501, MEX14.191, MEX14.146, MEX14.157 y Mex14.300 con virulencia a Yr1. Tomando como base siete líneas diferenciales se identificaron 25 razas, lo que significó una diversidad amplia en la población de P. striiformis presente durante 2014. La combinación de virulencia de Yr27 y Yr31 en las poblaciones del patógeno, representadas por la raza MEX14.191, entre otras, causaron que la variedad Nana F2007 se mostrara como susceptible. Los resultados indicaron una evolución contínua y acumulación de virulencias en las razas de P. striiformis de linaje agresivo adaptadas a temperaturas por arriba de 18 °C durante el periodo de incubación. De 2014 hasta 2022 la raza predominante, tanto en El Bajío como en los Valles Altos, siguió siendo MEX14.191. Pruebas en invernadero y campo mostraron que el 65% de líneas de trigo harinero provenientes del 48-IBWSN del CIMMYT fueron resistentes y su resistencia fue más efectiva en planta adulta.
