Em 2004, a Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) lançou a "Aliança Mundial para Segurança do Paciente", para conscientização e aprimoramento da segurança do paciente. Entre outras coisas, estabeleceu diretrizes para a implementação do checklist de cirurgia segura a ser realizado antes da indução anestésica, antes da incisão cirúrgica e antes do paciente sair da sala de operação. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a realização do checklist de cirurgia segura pela equipe cirúrgica de um hospital universitário localizado no oeste paranaense. METODOLOGIA: Trata-se de estudo observacional realizado entre os meses de junho e julho de 2022, durante as atividades assistenciais desenvolvidas na unidade de centro cirúrgico do referido hospital. A coleta de dados foi realizada por residentes de enfermagem, tendo aprovação do comitê de ética em pesquisa, Parecer 4.724.388, CAAE: 50066815.8.0000.0107. RESULTADOS: No total foi observado a realização de 35 checklist de procedimentos cirúrgicos durante o período estipulado para a coleta de dados. Observou-se que a maioria das verificações de cirurgia segura era realizada pela equipe da enfermagem, havendo uma certa resistência à adesão ao checklist por algumas especialidades médicas. No período avaliado, observou-se a prevenção de um possível evento adverso com a realização do checklist de cirurgia segura de forma adequada. Nesse caso, o paciente já estava posicionado na mesa cirúrgica, pronto para a indução anestésica, quando, durante a conferência dos materiais, o cirurgião alertou que não havia em sala o material necessário para a efetivação do procedimento cirúrgico e o mesmo foi cancelado antes do paciente ser anestesiado. No entanto, o estudo também observou um caso em que a realização do checklist foi falha, visto que a constatação de que o material necessário para a realização da cirurgia estava em falta no hospital foi feita depois que o paciente já estava anestesiado. CONCLUSÃO: A realização da verificação de cirurgia segura reduz a ocorrência de eventos adversos, evitáveis na sua grande maioria, e proporciona maior segurança tanto para paciente quanto para profissionais de saúde.
