Learning style is the composite of cognitive, affective, and physiological characteristics that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives, interacts and responds to the learning environment. Felder – Solomon Index of Learning Style (ILS) includes Sensitive/Intuitive, Visual/Verbal and Sequential/ Global, Active/reflective. The learning strategies are a major indicator of exam performance of students.Objective: To find the association between academiclearning strategies and annual examination results among medical students of King Edward Medical University.Study Design: Cross – sectional study design.Study Setting and Duration: King Edward Medical University and 3 months.Materials and Methods: The study was conducted among the 3rd, 4th, and 5th year medical students of KEMU Lahore. Informed consent was taken. A total of 300 students, 100 each from 3rd, 4th and 5th year were taken. 132 males (44%) and 168 females (56%) were part of the study. Simple Random sampling (non-pro-bability sampling) was used.Results: The overall dominant learning strategies among students of King Edward Medical University were sensing/SNS (64.3%), visual/VIS (80.7%), sequential/SEQ (63.7%) and Active/ACT (50.3%). Chi squared test for individual learning combinations against achiever types showed no significant association between academic learning strategies and annual exam performance (p value > 0.05). Results also showed that females performed better academically than their male counterparts.
Anemia is the most prevalent blood disorder, categorized into thalassemia and iron deficiency anemia. In anemia, the morphology of erythrocytes is disturbed, thus leading to abnormal functioning of the erythrocytes. Globally, thalassemia affects 1.3% of individuals and is one of the most widespread monogenic disorders in Pakistan. All over the World, women and children are most frequently affected by a type of nutritional deficiency known as iron deficiency anemia. The morphological changes that occur in erythrocytes due to these diseases are investigated in this study at the nano-scale level. Fifty samples of blood from individuals suffering from thalassemia or iron deficiency anemia were obtained from different hospitals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The blood samples were scanned using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) to check the morphological changes in both types of anemia. According to the present study, thalassemia is most prevalent in females in the age group between 5 and 15 years old, and iron deficiency is most prevalent in females in the age groups of 16-25 and 36-45 years old. Erythrocyte morphology is the significant determinant for diagnosing and discriminating between these two types of diseases. The study reports deformed erythrocytes in anemic patients, which were different from the ones that existed in the control. Thalassemia erythrocytes showed a crenated shape, iron deficiency anemia erythrocytes showed an elliptocyte shape and healthy erythrocytes showed a biconcave disk shape when using AFM and LSCM. These techniques seem to be very promising, cheap and less time consuming in determining the structure-function relationship of erythrocytes of thalassemic and iron deficiency anemic patients. The results of LSCM and AFM are quite useful in determining the morphological changes in erythrocytes and to study the disease at the molecular level within short period of time. Hence, we encourage employing these non-invasive techniques for the effective diagnosis of anemic patients.
Background: Reliable and peer reviewed information is of immense importance for preventive, diagnostic and curative solutions and efforts should be done to minimize inaccurate infodemics among post graduate trainee doctors. Objective: The aim of the study was to access the use of Peer Reviewed and Non-Peer Reviewed Information by post graduate trainee doctors for COVID-19 Pandemic in Pakistan. Methods: The study was analytical cross sectional in design and was conducted in 3193 post graduate trainee doctors employing Electronic Logbook (elog) system of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan. An online survey included demographic characteristics, year of training, specialty and sources of information used for COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Total 3193 study participants from all provinces of Pakistan were included with mean age of 28.68 years. Majority of participants (58.66%) used both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed information source for getting updated guidelines and information about COVID-19. According to bivariate analysis results, significant differences were revealed between the source of information and the age (p < 0.001), province (p < 0.001) and gender (p < 0.002). Multivariate logistic regression results showed that the age less than 30 years (AOR = 1.311, 95% (CI: 0.800, 2.146), working in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (AOR = 1.549, 95% (CI: 1.210-1.982) and female gender(AOR = 1.551, 95% (CI: 1.303, 1.847). was significantly associated with increased use of social media for getting information. Conclusion: Use of non-peer reviewed information for COVID-19 pandemic by postgraduate trainee doctors is common.
Sub-optimal health status is a gray state of health interceding between health and disease, causing reduction in vitality and adaptability in absence of any diagnosed illness. It is considered as a precursor to disease state whose prevention will decrease burden on healthcare system. Objectives: To assess the burden of suboptimal health status and analyze its association with lifestyle factors among undergraduate medical students. Methods: A cross sectional study conducted at King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. Questionnaires based upon “Sub-Health Measurement Scale V1.0 (SHMS V1.0)'' and “Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II (HPLP-II)'' were distributed among medical students of different years and 379 responses were completed. The data was entered in SPSS version 23 using quantitative variables. Chi-square test was employed to determine association of dependent with independent variables. Results: Frequency of the Sub-optimal health status and Health among individuals of study population was found to be 78.1% (296) and 21.9% (83) respectively. A significant positive association of lifestyle factors with Sub optimal Health Status was found (p < 0.005). There was a slightly high frequency of SHS among females than males and day scholars than hostellers. The respondents having SHS had lower mean values for each HPLP-II dimension relative to those who were reported as healthy. Conclusion: There is a high frequency of SHS among medical students. Poor lifestyle is a risk factor as a significant correlation exists. It can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Key Words: Sub optimal, SHS, Health, Lifestyle, Dimensions.
