The main purpose of the study was to investigate the knowledge and practices of women farmers on organic farming. The study was conducted in two union of Nilphamari Sadar upazila namely Lakshmi Chap and Palashbari under Nilphamari district. Ninety-two (92) women farmers were randomly selected as sample from an updated list of 120 women farmers. Data were collected by a pre-tested interview schedule during 1st to 30th October 2020. Simple and direct questions with different appropriate scales were used to obtain information. Descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis was used for the present study. Majority of the respondents know about rotating crops, using different wastes, composting, limiting the use of synthetic/ chemical fertilizers, trap method, and mulching as part of organic farming practices. Majority of the respondents opined that they were practicing more than once „Using organic fertilizer‟, „using plant waste‟, and „using kitchen waste‟ for the last 12 months. Slightly above four-fifths (83.7 percent) of the women farmers had medium practices on organic farming, while 14.1 percent women farmers had high practices on organic farming, and only 2.2 percent women farmers had low practices on organic farming. Thus, a proportion of 85.9 percent of the women farmers low to medium practices on organic farming. Correlation analysis indicated that among nine socio-economic profile educational qualifications, farm holding, training received, extension media contact and innovativeness of women farmers had significant positive relationship with their practices on organic farming. However, age, organic farming experience, annual family income and cosmopoliteness had no significant positive relationship with their practices on organic farming. Regression analysis indicated that education qualification, farm holding, extension media contact, and innovativeness of the respondents had significant positive contribution with their practices on organic farming. The main purpose of this study was to determine the use and role of mobile phone for information services in agricultural activities as well as to explore the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of women farmers and their use of mobile phone in agricultural activities. Data were collected using pre-tested interview schedule from a sample of 85 women farmers during the month of August 2018. Besides descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to explore the significant influencing factors. Ten (10) different android mobile phone apps were identified which are most frequently used by the women farmers in the study area. Among the mobile apps, ‘vutta or maize app’ was found as the top used mobile app for information services in agricultural activities. This might be because of rapidly spreading of maize cultivation as a highly benefited cereal crops against the climatic change situation in the study area. Findings indicated that among the women farmers, majority (64.7 percent) of the women farmers used mobile phone moderately for information services in agricultural activities followed by 23.5 percent high and only 11.8 percent low used of mobile phone. Among ten socio-economic characteristics of the women farmers, education, annual income, organizational participation, training received and ICT self-efficacy had positive significant relationship and influence of the use of mobile phone in agricultural activities. ‘Insect and disease control measures’ was found the 1st ranked agricultural activities in which mobile phone played highest role for information services. It suggests that issues related to economic impact or effect of mobile phone on sustainable livelihood could be considered for future research to be undertaken.
The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of use of fish farming practices by the fish farmers. This study was conducted at three unions named Hapania, Kirtipur, and Tilakpur of NaogaonSadarupazilla under Naogaon district. Ninety-two (92) fish farmers were randomly selected as sample from an updated list of 120 fish farmers. Data were collected by a pre-tested interview schedule during 20th September to 20th October 2020. Simple and direct questions with different appropriate scales were used to obtain information. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis was used for the present study. Slightly above half (53.3 percent) of the fish farmers had medium use of fish farming practices, while 42.4 percent fish farmers had high use of fish farming practices, and only 4.3 percent fish farmers had low use of fish farming practices. Thus, overwhelming majority (95.7 percent) of the fish farmers had medium to high use of fish farming practices. Pond size, fish farming experience, cosmopoliteness, and extension contacts of the respondents had significant positive contribution with their use of fish farming practices. Coefficients of other selected variables namely age, education, family size, annual income, and knowledge on fish farming didn’t have any significant contribution with their use of fish farming practices. ‘Lack of government support’ emerged as the 1st ranked problem as per opinion given by the fish farmers (77.17 percent). The char land of Bangladesh is vulnerable to climate change. There are changes in extreme weather events. Impact of climate change resulted feminization of agricultural practices. Number of development interventions have been taken to skill the rural community to take adaptation action on agriculture. Development interventions taken in the char land of Dimla, Nilphamari were studied from June 2018 to December 2019 to identify the capacity of climate change adaptation interventions using the information and communication technology to empower women. Mobile Phone Use Index study found that nearly three-fourth of rural female farmers were capable to manage knowledge on climate change adaptation if their access to device was ensured. Inclusion of women in the technology playing a very important role towards transformative leadership. Nearly 85% of the women farmers have high environmental awareness; likely to be contributory to adaptation knowledge management. Community themselves identified them more resilient comparing with areas where promotion of technology is not supported. Institutes with the capacity of information technology promotion could be the hub of resilience knowledge management for women, but external supports are required there. Self-motivation supported by project intervention has created notable capacity of a good number of women who could be the mentor of women transformative leadership towards resilience. Int. J. Agril. The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of adoption of four crops cultivation pattern by the farmers, to determine the factors influenced by the farmers in adopting four crops cultivation pattern and to explore the relationships between nine selected characteristics of the farmers with their adoption of four crops cultivation pattern. Data were collected from a sample of 104 farmers (out of 400) selected by simple random sampling procedure from Baragoan and Nargun union under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila of Thakurgaon district. A pretested and structured interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents during 15 September to 15 October, 2016. The highest proportion (75.0 percent) of the farmers had medium adoption of four crops cultivation pattern, while 23.1 and 1.9 percent of them had high and low adoption of four crops cultivation pattern respectively. The major factor influenced the farmers were “four crop cultivation is profitable’’, followed by “four crop cultivation is very important for food security.’’ Government subsidies are available when faced with the loss of crops, timely receipt of NGO loans and provides food for cattle had ranked last three positions. Correlation analyses indicated that among nine selected characteristics education, annual income, training received, organizational participation, extension media contact and agricultural knowledge had positive significant relationships with their adoption of four crops cultivation pattern. However, age, family size, and farm size of the farmers had no significant relationships with their adoption of four crops cultivation pattern.
