Social entrepreneurship had become a buzz word in the 2000s. Some factors are influencing social entrepreneurship. In 2017, the Johor ruler introduced a social entrepreneurship program named Duta Jauhar, a state-level social entrepreneurship program that may train students to become social entrepreneurs during their study duration. Besides increasing the number of young social entrepreneurs in Malaysia, Duta Jauhar program might benefit the unfortunate societies, for example, single mothers and orphanage homes. Literature shows that it is interesting to find out the relationship between the prior experience, the empathy, and the selfefficacy of the participants towards social entrepreneurship of Duta Jauhar participants. Thus, this study will focus on these three variables. Adopting quantitative methodology, the instrument for data collection was online questionnaires with 101 respondents of Duta Jauhar 4.0 participants. The study found out that there is a relationship between social entrepreneurship intention with prior experience and self-efficacy. However, there is no significant relationship between empathy and social entrepreneurship intention. It is because merely having empathy is not sufficient to enhance the social entrepreneurship intention. The most influential factor in the study is the self-efficacy of the participants. At the last part of the study, the researchers discussed some recommendations for the organisation, which is Yayasan Pelajaran Johor; and the avenue of future research.
Off-classroom training is important to sharpen the soft skills of university students. The study discussedthe relationship of lecturer support and self-efficacy with training effectiveness of students outside theclassroom. The scope of study was 314 agriculture students taking human resource management course. The study applied quantitative research method and underpinned by training engagement theory, whichconsiders both internal and external factors in evaluating training effectiveness. The findings wereanalyzed using IBM-SPSS v 24 software. The findings showed that both variables significantly influencedtraining effectiveness, and self-efficacy influenced training effectiveness more than lecturer support. It isconcluded that the understanding of the best factor influencing training effectiveness will assist lecturersin designing suitable training programs for the students in the future. Keywords: lecturer support; self-efficacy; off-classroom training; training effectiveness; training engagement theory
Societal transformation towards greater quality of life and well-being requires an inclusive perspective of development. Existing perspectives toward inclusive growth are mainly static. As such, applications of the existing static models are limited as they do not capture the dynamic nature of growth. This problem can be remedied by viewing inclusive growth from a dynamic perspective by means of explaining the dynamic elements of growth and its constraints. Using a cybernetics approach, we illustrate an application of a dynamic inclusive growth analysis of a district. In this study, we define the system-in-focus (inclusive growth in a district) to be viewed from a human activity system. This cybernetics analysis is found to be useful in identifying the growth constraints variables in the district as well as the relationships between them.
Subject area “Starting up a new company” and “development of technology-based venture”. Study level/applicability The target audiences for this study are advanced business or non-business undergraduate students and MBA students taking courses of entrepreneurship, management of innovation and organization theory and design. Case overview Yeayyy.com was a private limited company based in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, a township located about 30 km south of Kuala Lumpur. It was founded by Mr Hazmin in early 2010 with a seed funding of RM150,000 (about US$50,000). By the end of 2014, its core businesses include developing mobile application (app), software and website, as well as conducting information technology (IT) training. The company had developed its own animation cartoon, Oolat Oolit, and had commercialized several mobile app inventions. These mobile apps include a Jawi (traditional Malay writing system) app, mobile games and Facebook apps which were compatible with most mobile operating systems. Since its inception, Yeayyy.com had aspired to follow the footsteps of the internationally acclaimed Malaysian home-grown animation production house, Les’ Copaque, which had produced the popular Upin Ipin series. Similar to Les’ Copaque, Yeayyy.com also planned to commercialize its in-house characters into TV series and to market related merchandises, along with its collaborative partner, CikuTree Studio. However, by the end of 2014, the company’s seed funding had depleted, thus forcing Mr Hazmin to strategize for the company’s future. Expected learning outcomes Understanding the process of entrepreneurship and technology-based venture development enables case analysts to apply the concepts in many situations involving business opportunities and company development. Subject code CSS:3 Entrepreneurship.
The Malaysian government has been striving to provide an environment conducive to research commercialisation in the country. Despite the efforts, the targeted research commercialisation rate has yet to be achieved. This paper explores the motivation of the academic researchers who had successfully commercialised their research.Literature classifies motivation factors as extrinsic, intrinsic, and prosocial, which might exist independently or in a combination (mixed-motivation). Within the academic research commercialisation context, a considerable number of existing studies have discussed the role of extrinsic motivation factors, while the issues of intrinsic andprosocial factors have not been much studied. Thus, this study proposed a conceptual framework to further understand the role of each motivation factor as well as the role of mixed-motivation factors among academic researchers who had successfully commercialised their research results. Finally, this research enriches the dearth of research commercialisation literature in Malaysian university settings.
