Background/aim: SARS-CoV-2 disease was announced as a pandemic by The World Health Organization in on early 2020. It is still threatening the world population. Here, we aimed to produce hyperimmune sera that contain immunoglobulin G and F(ab')2 fragments sourced from horse antibodies as an urgent response to the pandemic.Materials and methods: SARS-CoV-2 was produced and inactivated with three different methods [formaldehyde (FA), formaldehyde, and binary ethylene amine (FA+BEI), and heat treatment]. After invitro in vitro inactivation control, immunogens were mixed with Freund's adjuvant, thereafter horses (n: 2 for FA, 4 for FA + BEI, 2 for Heat inactivation) and New Zealand rabbits (n: 6 for FA, 6 for FA + BEI, 6 for Heat inactivation) were immunized four times. Neutralizing antibody levels of the sera were measured at the 4 th , 6 th , and 8 th weeks. When the antibodies were detected at the peak level, plasma was collected from horses and hyperimmune sera procured after the purification process. Results: Horses and rabbits produced highly neutralizing antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 in FA and FA + BEI inactivation groups, foreign proteins were removed effectively after purification. Conclusion:This study presents a profitable practice to develop horse-specific antisera against SARS-CoV-2 for emergency and low-cost response. In further studies, new purification methods can be used to increase the efficiency of the final product.
The study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of radial nerve self-mobilization [RNSM], manual therapy [MT], and extracorporeal shock wave therapy [ESWT] on pain, pain-free grip strength, functional status, and patient satisfaction in patients with Lateral Epicondylitis [LE] and to determine the superiority of these methods to each other. 48 patients diagnosed with LE were included in the study and were randomly divided into three groups. RNSM was applied to all patients as a home program. The first group [n=16] received only the RNSM as a home program, the MT group [n=16] received MT combined with RNSM, and the ESWT group [n=16] received ESWT combined with RNSM. The RNSM was applied five days per week, and the MT and ESWT for two sessions per week for three weeks. Pain severity, pain-free handgrip strength, functionality levels, and patient satisfaction were evaluated before and after three weeks of treatment. The pain level significantly decreased, and handgrip strength and functionality increased in all groups after three weeks [p<0.001]. In comparison between the groups, the decrease in pain level, the increase in maximum grip strength, and patients' overall satisfaction scores were found to be higher in the MT group than in the ESWT, and only the RNSM groups [p<0.05]. MT application combined with radial nerve self-mobilization exercises in the treatment of LE appears to be more effective.
This research aims to reveal the temporal changes and spatial patterns of Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) in Turkey in the last 16 years using OIE and MoAF data. Considering the zoonotic character and socio-economic impact of the disease, the rapid increase in the number of bTB outbreaks has reached alarming levels recently. As a matter of fact, around 20-fold increase in the number of outbreaks between 2005 and 2020 clearly shows this. In the same period, the compensation payment of approximately 611 million new TL (₺) for 168,244 cattle that were conditionally slaughtered and died due to illness reveals the economic impact of the disease. Also, it is known that human cases are caused by M. bovis, although at a low rate (5.3%). In parallel with the increase in the number of bTB outbreaks, it has spread throughout the country (except for some provinces) geographically. It is important to fight bTB disease effectively, to reduce the risks to public health and the socio-economic losses caused by the disease. For this reason, it is extremely important to monitor the temporal course of the disease outbreaks epidemiologically and to reveal their spatial patterns at various scales. For an effective fight against bTB, it is vital to monitor, analyze, and put into practice the temporal changes and spatial distribution dynamics of all the variables (especially animal movements) of the transmission dynamics in the epidemiology of the disease.
