Calcareous nannofossils, mineralogical and geochemical investigations are carried out on the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary of the Gulneri Formation in the Azmir, Dokan and Degala sections, northern Iraq. Regarding the calcareous nannofossil data CC11 and CC12 biozones were identified. A detailed investigation was carried out to identify calcareous nannofossils species. On the basis of their stratigraphic distribution, two biozones were proposed in this study; Quadrum gartneri Interval Biozone (CC11) part and Lucianrhabdus maleformis Interval Biozone (CC12) part. Correlation with other calcareous nannofossils biozones from regional schemes led to conclude that the age of the Gulneri Formation in the studied sections is the early Turonian. Mineralogical (X-ray diffraction XRD) and trace elements geochemistry (X-ray fluorescence XRF) data along with the dominance of calcareous nannofossil Watznauria that indicates warm and arid climatic condition prevailing in the Cenomanian-Turonian transition.

The sequence in the upper part of the Balambo Formation is composed mainly of limestone alternating with marly limestones and dark grey shale in the Bosheen section (eastern Sulaymaniyah, northeastern Iraq) and has been studied in terms of its rare earth element (REE) content. The REEs are very low compared to modern marine sediments. They are depletion in LREEs, and enrichment in HREEs and (La/Yb)N in the studied rocks, indicating that these sediments retained the REEs pattern of marine waters. The negative Ce anomaly reflects direct sedimentation from marine waters under anoxic conditions with the contribution of terrigenous clays. The positive correlation of ∑REEs with Al, Ti, and Y, and the negative correlation of ∑REEs with CaO, in addition to the variation in Y/Ho ratio, all may indicate the presence of terrigenous fractions as the main source for REEs in the studied strata. The REEs pattern of the upper part of the Balambo Formation mostly shows original characteristics, some of which were modified by detrital input. According to (La/Yb)N ratios, the sedimentation rate varied during the deposition of the Balambo Formation in the function of its position along the continental margin.

The study deals with succession from the upper part of the Late Albian Balambo Formation which are composed of fine-grained dark gray to black calcareous shale, limestone and marly limestone rich in sedimentary structures such as lamination, fissility and platy structures. Microfacies analysis revealed that mudstone, wackstone and few of ‫المعماري‬ ‫عبد‬ ‫فالح‬ ‫وآخرون‬ 87 packstone are the main facies in the studied succession. The studied rocks generally are rich in organic matter and pyrite in addition to dominance of radiolaria, sponge spicules and foraminifera with elongated champers maybe "Schackoina" genus. All these characters indicate deposition in marine conditions with reduced or absent-oxygen condition that relate to oceanic anoxic event (1d).

In the current work, the Gulneri Formation (Early Turonian) is studied in three surface sections (Degala, Dokan and Azmir) from northeastern Iraq. The formation is characterized by grey to black color limestone and marly limestone in the Degala and ‫فتحي‬ ‫ان‬ ‫صفو‬ ‫اللهيبي‬ ‫وآخرون‬ 106 Dokan sections, whereas in Azmir section, fissile marl and marly limestone with pale to reddish color are dominated in addition to few beds, which occasionally contain fish remains, with distinct gray color reflecting the very few amount of total organic carbon in these beds. Microfacies analysis revealed that the formation consists of three microfacies: mudstone, wackestone and packstone. The predominance of dwarfish planktonic foraminifera (Heterohilex) and thin shell filaments particularly in packstone microfacies represent Heterohelix shift event and filament event respectively. In addition to these events, fish remains, radiolarian pyritization, planktonic foraminiferal chambers elongation and glauconite are all refer to anoxic environmental conditions that may have been coincided with the Global Cenomanian-Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-2).
