Abstract. Design and Build (DB) projects are prone with high risks. The appropriate risk allocation among contracting parties in Design and Build (DB) projects is an important and essential decision leading to the project performance. The establishment of risk allocation at early stage of the projects will contribute great impact to the project objective. It is required judgement and experiential knowledge of the construction experts to determine the appropriateness of risk allocation to the parties involved in DB projects. Therefore, this study has been carried out to investigate and determine the most responsible parties that should handle the risk in DB projects. A total of 170 responses from stakeholder's (Client, Consultant and Contractor) were received and analysed by using descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Wallis test. Sixty-four risk allocation criteria were used and the results of these analyses shows that 41 risks allocated to the contractor, 9 risks allocated to the client, 6 risks allocated to the consultant, and 8 risks are undecided. There were 17 risks allocations were found with significant differences in between stakeholders on their perceptions. This paper is to help stakeholders define clearly their responsibilities on risks in DB projects and make a better decision in handling it.
This paper discusses the design-build project delivery method which is becoming an increasingly viable alternative to traditional project delivery method in the public sector. This interest has led to dialogue among public sector agencies to establish and formalise understanding of the design-build process and its implementation. The process consists of six stages namely Project Definition, Request for Qualification, Request for Proposal, Proposal Submission and Evaluation, Contract Award, and Document/Construction. Therefore, this finding of Design-Build (DB) procurement process is on the improvement and understanding on an owner and contractor in practice and implementation in Malaysia. Construction industry like other industries is subject to risks due to the unique and complexity of the construction industries. It shows the risk exposure at highest level during the tendering process. The objective of this paper is to evaluate risk variable on contractor’s tender figure in Malaysia. To achieve the objective, questionnaire survey was conducted on G7 contractor in Malaysia. A total of 120 usable postal questionnaires was received. The findings have shown quality expectation, price inflation of construction materials, the risk involved in the project and financial capability of the client are most significant factors to be considered by contractors when estimating the pricing risks. The study recommended that competent contractors should be allowed to tender project as to see the risk variable inherent during tendering process that will affect project performance.
Construction defects are always the key concern of the construction industry. Different constructed facilities generate different types of defects and demand different levels and types of quality, depending on the functions, system types, and materials used. Therefore, this study has been carried out to study the defect that happens in construction project and identify the strategies in minimizing the defect in building construction project. The studies were carried out using the questionnaires which were distributed to the contractors. Finally the recommendation was made based on the findings. This study helps to increase the awareness of Malaysian contractor towards managing and minimizing the defect works. By doing this, Malaysian contractor will bring up Malaysian construction industry into the next level of managing construction project.
