Background: Oxidative damage is of great importance for patients with breast cancer. Thus, studies were performed to identify the relationship between breast cancer and oxidative stress biomarkers.
Objectives: In this study, our aim was to find out the oxidative and antioxidant status, serum thiol-disulphide levels in subjects with breast cancer.
Methods: This study was conducted between March and June 2018 with 82 control subjects (aged between 32-67 years) and 127 breast cancer patients (aged between 27-66 years) (p=0.058) in Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine, Konya, Turkey. Serum myeloperoxidase (MPO), catalase, prolidase were analyzed with kinetic spectrophotometric and thiol-disulphide, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), ceruloplasmin were detected by colorimetric methods.
Results: Serum levels of catalase [199.3 (16.4-489.9) vs 81.6 (18.2-322.9) (kU/L)], MPO [124±28 vs 101±31 U/L], disulphide [25 (11-61) vs 18 (2-41) µmol/L], IMA [0.66 (0.31-3.30) vs 0.62 (0.19-1.31) absorbance unit (ABSU)] and prolidase levels [2217±538 vs 1456±401 U/L] were higher in patients than control subjects (For all p<0.001 except for IMA p=0.031). Native thiol [342±60 vs 391±52 µmol/L] and total thiol levels [396±56 vs 430±52 µmol/L] were lower in patients compared with the control group (For all p<0.001).
Conclusions: Levels of serum thiol/disulphide and prolidase might be reliable indicators for determining oxidative status in certain patient populations.
Öz Purpose: Hospitals and outpatient clinics are now using point-of-care testing (POCT) devices that contract for the use of diagnostic analyses at the site of patient care delivery, so, facilitating earlier decision-making besides proper treatment. In our study, the aim was to assess the quantitative Nano-Ditech (Cranbury, NJ, USA), CK-MB, cTnIandmyoglobin POC assays and to compare them with the Getein 1100 (Nanjing, China) CK-MB, cTnI and myoglobin POC assays. Materials and Methods: Lithium heparin plasma samples (Terumo Europe N.V. Leuven, Belgium,) for Getein 1100 and Nano-Ditech cardiac marker samples were randomly collected from among routine samples from 100 patients (53 male and 47 female) with chest pain complaint who admitted to BilecikGolpazarı Government Hospital between August-September 2017 and all analyses were performed using the Nano-Ditechanalyzer and comparative analyses were performedby the Getein 1100) assays. Results: In our study, the correlation between the two devices was found to be r = 0.023 and p=0.017 for troponin, r = 0.130 and p=<0.001 for CK-MB and there is no correlation for myoglobin. Conclusion: According to evaluation of both devices' analytical performances, it was found that the comparison of the all values of troponin, CK-MB and myoglobin, which are important for the diagnosis and exclusion of acute myocardial infarction(AMI), is discordant with the method comparison protocol proposed by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) (EP-9).
Aim: Vitamin D is one of the major hormones involved in phosphorus metabolism in the secosteroid structure. Studies have shown that low serum vitamin D levels are associated with chronic diseases such as autoimmune diseases, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the seasonal variability of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the adult population (18-98) according to age and gender in Bilecik province, Turkey. Methods: The medical records of the patients admitted to hospital between January 2016 and December 2017 were retrospectively screened. The medications of the patients were evaluated. Serum vitamin D levels of 22205 patients were evaluated according to age, gender and seasons. Results: According to the data, serum vitamin D were analyzed from the sera of 17070 females (76,9%) and 5135 males (23.1%). The median values of serum vitamin D levels of the participants were 17.2 ng/ml (4.2-137.9 ng/ml) in females and 22.9 ng/ml (4.3-144.0 ng/ml) in males. According to the seasonal classification, deficient serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were detected in all seasons in females and in males (p<0.001). Unlike men, vitamin D deficiency was detected in women during the spring (p<0.001). For all subjects, median serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were 20.2 ng/mL (4.33-127.2 ng/mL), 16.3 ng/mL (4.23-144.0 ng/mL), 18.6 ng/mL (4.20-129.0 ng/mL) and 19.6 ng/mL (4.30-137.9 ng/mL) for autumn, spring, winter, and summer seasons , respectively. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among adults in Bilecik. The serum 25-Hydroxy-Vitamin D Levels were higher in the males than in the females for all seasons (p<0.001). We recommend vitamin D supplementation for adults with additional sunlight exposure.
