The gubernaculum, which has an iInpRanl role to play in testicular dcsccnt. is richly supplied by the genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve through its scrota1 attachment. In neonatal rats the penitofemoral nerve overlying the pwas muscle was divided before inguinal descent would normally occur. and the effect of thib pw~dure on subsequent testicular descent was observed. Denervrtion of the gubwnaculum caused the tcsteb to remain in the abdomen. The significance of this finding in the rat is that an intrct genitofemorrl nerve i s an essential prerequisite for normal descent. perhaps by allowing the gubernaculum to evert.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
