Experimental results on the production of dimuons by 800-GeV protons incident on a copper target are presented. The results include measurements of both the continuum of dimuons and the dimuon decays of the three lowest-mass Y S states. A description of the apparatus, data acquisition, and analysis techniques is included. A comparison of the results with data taken at lower incident energies indicates a scaling behavior of the continuum dimuon yields.
We have measured the differential production cross sections as a function of scaled momentum x p ϭ2 p/E c.m. of the identified hadron species ϩ , K ϩ , K 0 , K* 0 , , p, ⌳ 0 , and of the corresponding antihadron species in inclusive hadronic Z 0 decays, as well as separately for Z 0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b flavors. Clear flavor dependences are observed, consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results were used to test the QCD predictions of Gribov and Lipatov, the predictions of QCD in the modified leading logarithm approximation with the ansatz of local parton-hadron duality, and the predictions of three fragmentation models. The ratios of production of different hadron species were also measured as a function of x p and were used to study the suppression of strange meson, strange and non-strange baryon, and vector meson production in the jet fragmentation process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of the above predictions, as they remove the contribution of heavy hadron production and decay from that of the rest of the fragmentation process. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production as a function of x p in light quark ͑as opposed to antiquark͒ jets. Differences are observed at high x p , providing direct evidence that higher-momentum hadrons are more likely to contain a primary quark or antiquark. The differences for pseudoscalar and vector kaons provide new measurements of strangeness suppression for high-x p fragmentation products. ͓S0556-2821͑99͒06101-9͔
Results of high-transverse-momentum charged-hadron production in 400-GeV/c proton-proton and proton-deuteron collisions and 800-GeV/c proton-proton collisions are presented. The transverse-momentum range of the data is from 5.2 to 9.0 GeV/c for the 400-GeV/c collisions and from 3.6 to 11.0 GeV/c for the 800-GeV/c collisions; the data are centered around 90" in the proton-nucleon center-of-momentum system. Single-pion invariant cross sections and particle ratios were measured at both energies. The results are compared to previous experiments and the Lund model. 2777
Temperature dependent Hall effect, optical admittance spectroscopy, and optical absorption measurements of semi-insulating bulk 4H-SiC are reported. Both intentionally vanadium doped material and commercial grade semi-insulating material were investigated. The carrier concentration versus inverse temperature results from Hall effect measurements up to 1000 K indicated the samples were dominated by one of two deep levels near midgap. In addition to the deep donor level of substitutional vanadium, E c Ϫ1.6 eV, we observed another level at E c Ϫ1.1 eV in some samples, indicating that levels other than the vanadium donor can pin the Fermi level in semi-insulating SiC. Optical admittance measurements on the semi-insulating material indicate the presence of levels at E c Ϫ1.73 and 1.18 eV that were previously observed in conducting samples with this technique and we attribute these levels to the same defects producing the 1.1 and 1.6 eV levels seen by Hall effect. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements of dopant and impurity concentrations are reported. Even though vanadium is present in all of these samples, along with other impurities we are at present unable to definitively identify the 1.1 eV level.
We present measurements of Rs using the SLD at the SLC. The analyses use 2D and 3D impact parameter tags and a displaced 3D vertex tag which all exploit the small size and stability of the e+e-interaction point and the precision 3D CCD pixel vertex detector to achieve high b&tagging efficiencies and purities. The combined measurement yields Rb = 0.229 f 0.011 and is consistent with standard model predictions.PACS number(s): 13.38.Dg, 13.65.+i
