The ring inversion of cyclohexane derivatives with one, two and three pairs of geminal methyl and alkoxyl groups has been studied by investigations of the temperature dependence of the NMR signals. The rate of the inversion depends on the number and the relative positions of the ligand pairs as well as on their size. A single pair of geminal ligands has only a very slight effect on the inversion rate. Two ligand pairs hinder the inversion when they are in the 1 and 4 positions relative to one another, but facilitate it when they are in the 1 and 3 positions. In both cases the effects are smaller with methoxyl groups than with methyl groups.Three ligand pairs significantly increase the inversion rate when they are in 1, 3 and 5 positions, but reduce it when they are in the 1, 2 and 4 positions. The effect of 1,3 substituents is attributed to an increase in the energy of the ground state of the molecules whereas the effect of 1,4 arranged substituents is attributed to an increase in the energy of the transition state of the chair inversion. The rates of ring-inversion of six- and seven-membered cyclic trisulfides were investigated by nmr-spectroscopy. The JG#-values are higher than those of the corresponding disulfides. but are not high enough for separation of conformational isomers. At low temperatures the nmr-spectra in some cases show the signals of two different conformers. For certain examples simple symmetry-considerations allow the identification of the actual conformation.
Activation energies E, and free enthalpies of activation AG: were determined by NMR for the ring inversions of nineteen 1.3-dioxanes, 1.3-dithianes and 1.3-oxathianes and their methylsubstituted derivatives. The rate constants k of the chair to chair-inversion of these rings depend on the number and positions of the substituents. In substituted 1.3-dioxanes k is lower than in 1.3-dioxane itself if two geminal CH,-groups are situated in position 5. However, k becomes higher when the geminal CH,-groups are in positions 2 or 4. The rate constants are particularly high for 4.4.6.6-tetramethyl-1.
3-dioxane.A similar dependence of k on substituents has been observed in the oxathianes, while with 1.3dithianes only a small influence is noticed.Theeffect ofthemethyl substituentsin positions 2 or 4 in 1.3-dioxanes can be explained by assuming that the chair conformation is deformed by 1.3-interactions. In 1.3-dithianes such 1.3-interactions are expected to be smaller because of the larger C-S bond length. For 1.3-oxathianes the dependence of k on the substituents is more difficult to understand since these molecules are not symmetrical.
