Summary: In an extensive survey involving 2176 goats 1.56% of goats manifested clinical lesions of ringworm infection. Animals below the age of 6 months were affected most (4.20%). The incidence of infection was higher during the winter months. T. verrucosum, T. mentagrophytes and M. gypseum were isolated from the skin scrapings of 12, 4, and 2 goats respectively. It is suggested that the infected animals could be a source of disease to human population in which the zoophilic dermatophyte invasion is characterized by severe inflammatory lesions of the skin. The zoonotic importance of different dermatophytes is stressed.
Any abrupt change in the diet of the ruminant from hay to concentrates is often associated with acute indigestion characterised by increased production of lactic acid in the rumen leading to rumen acidosis (I; 3; 5; 11). The presence of large quantities of lactic acid in ruminal ingesta and its rapid entry into blood provides a tremendous challenge to the buffering capacity of rumen and body fluids. There is no report in the available literature regarding acid-base balance due to rumen lactic acidosis in buffaloes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the basic changes in acid-base balance of buffalocalves following experimental creation of rumen acidosis and its treatment with suitable therapeutic agents. Material and MethodsExperiments were conducted on seven fistulated two years old buffalo-calves. For blood gas analysis, venous blood was collected in precalibrated capillary tubes in the morning, before feeding, on alternate days for a week. Venous pH, PcoI and Po2 were measured in a blood gas analyser. Venous bicarbonate (mEq/L) was calculated from a blood gas calculator based on the Hendersen Hasselbalch equation. Carbonic acid (mEq/L) was calculated by using the solubility coefficient of carbon dioxide (H,CO, = Pco, x 0.03). The carbonic acid bicarbonate ratio of each sample was determined from the above values.Packed cell volume (P. C. V.) was determined by the method of WINTROBE (12).To induce rumen acidosis, crushed wheat grains at the rate of 50gm./kg. body wt.were given intraruminally to each animal. Following the induction of rumen acidosis, blood samples were collected at 24 hr intervals up to 120 hr for blood gas analysis and measurement of P. C. V. Two buffalo-calves died 60 hr after the beginning of the experiment. In the remaining five animals, therapeutic measures were started 70 hr after the start of the experiment. The therapeutic regimen consisted of transplantation of ruminal cud from healthy animals, parenteral administration of 2.5 "/a sodium bicarbonate solution with 5 "./a dextrose saline, anthisan (antihistaminic) and supportive therapy with liver extract and thiamine. Additionally, magnesium carbonate was administered intraruminally to supplement parenteral administration of sodium/bicarbonate. U. S.
Summary: On clinical examination of 1232 sheep belonging to the urban and rural areas of Punjab (India) lesions of ringworm could be detected in 22 animals giving an incidence of 1.78%. Animals below the age of 6 months were more frequently affected (7.4%), than those above 6 months (1.03%). Culturally, T. verrucosum, T. mentagrophytes and M. gypseum could be isolated from the skin scrapings of four, two and one sheep respectively.
