INTRODUÇÃOO esforço no desenvolvimento de cerâmicas condutoras tem-se intensificado não somente devido à demanda em diversas áreas, mas principalmente pela aplicação em células a combustível. A célula à combustível é um sistema capaz de converter diretamente a energia química de um determinado combustível em energia elétrica. Desenvolver células a combustível com baixa resistência interna permite aumentar a eficiência de conversão de energia, reduzir o custo, contribuindo para a redução de danos ambientais associados aos processos convencionais de combustão [1]. Dentre os diferentes tipos de células a combustível, as de óxidos sólidos (SOFC -Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) se destacam pela melhor eficiência de conversão. Nessas células os materiais cerâmicos encontram aplicação tanto como eletrólito quanto como anodo, catodo e interconector, componentes básicos deste dispositivo. As pesquisas concentram-se na busca de materiais compatíveis para operacionalizar dispositivos em alta temperatura (~ 1000 ºC), com o objetivo principal de impedir ou reduzir o "stress" térmico e perda nas propriedades físico-químicas devido à reação entre os materiais componentes, com conseqüente perda no desempenho [2]. Segue aberto então, este vasto campo de pesquisa na área de materiais condutores de modo a viabilizar a fabricação de dispositivos para a produção de energia limpa com custos competitivos.O óxido de cério tem se tornado um material de destaque na aplicação como catalisadores de oxidação devido ao seu efeito promotor em reações catalíticas heterogêneas, tornando-se um componente-chave no tratamento de gases de exaustão de veículos automotores e em outras aplicações Resumo O método precursor polimérico foi aplicado para a síntese de pós de Ti x (Sm 0,2 Ce 0,8 ) 1-x O 2-δ , com 0 ≤ x ≤ 0,5, com tratamento nas temperaturas de 400 ºC, 700 ºC e 1000 ºC. A caracterização foi feita por difração de raios X e o refinamento estrutural pelo método de Rietveld. A inserção do titânio tende a aumentar a deformação da rede da estrutura cristalina, que não é eliminada até a temperatura de 700 ºC. Nestas condições as amostras ainda se mostraram monofásicas como cerianita. Para as amostras tratadas a 1000 ºC, a deformação provocada pela introdução do titânio é suprimida e a solubilidade do titânio na cerianita se limita a valores de x < 0,05. O excedente precipita-se como única fase secundária de titanato de samário para valores de 0,5 ≤ x ≤ 0,20. Quando x excede este valor, observa-se também a precipitação da fase rutila. Paralelamente, há uma diminuição da fase titanato de samário e a re-incorporação do samário pela cerianita, sendo que esta é comprovada pelo aumento dos parâmetros de rede da cerianita.
