Selective Hydrogenation of SO2 to Elemental Sulfur Over Transition Metal Sulfides Supported on Al2O3.-Screening tests for a number of transition metal sulfides on Al2O3 supports show that the Fe group metals (Fe, Co, Ni) exhibit the highest catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of SO2 to elemental sulfur. A decrease in the catalytic activity at 300 • C in the order: group VIII (Fe, Co, Ni) ¿ group IV (Cr, Mo, W) ¿ Cu, Zn ¿ V, Mn is observed. The metal sulfides are transformed from a sulfur deficient to a catalytically active disulfide form (FeS2, CoS2, NiS2). The catalytic activity, attributed to sulfur vacancies in the metal sulfides, decreases as a function of the crystal structures in the order pyrites (FeS2, CoS2, NiS2) ¿ layered structure (MoS2, WS2) ¿ covellite (CuS) ¿ wurtzite (ZnS, MnS). -(PAIK, S.
