Die Schlange wird zweifellos als Kreuz-otter (Vipera berus) identiziert. In Norddeutschland ist sie die einzige en-demische Gischlange. Typisch für den Biss einer Kreuzotter sind die ausge-prägte Lokalreaktion und in den meis-ten Fällen ein sich schnell von der Biss-stelle ausbreitendes Ödem. Darüber hinaus sind auch systemische Giwir-kungen (gastrointestinale, kardiovasku-läre, hämostaseologische, respiratori-sche, neurologische), anaphylaktische (IgE-vermittelte Soforttypreaktionen) oder anaphylaktoide Reaktionen möglich. Todesfälle durch Kreuzotterbiss wurden seit 50 Jahren nicht mehr beobachtet.
