Older adults are the main victims of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak and elderly in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCFs) are severely hit in terms of mortality. This paper presents a quantitative study of the impact of COVID-19 outbreak in Italy during first stages of the epidemic, focusing on the effects on mortality increase among older adults over 80 and its correlation with LTCFs. The study of growth patterns shows a power-law scaling regime for the first stage of the pandemic with an uneven behaviour among different regions as well as for the overall mortality increase according to the different impact of COVID-19. However, COVID-19 incidence rate does not fully explain the differences of mortality impact in older adults among different regions. We define a quantitative correlation between mortality in older adults and the number of people in LTCFs confirming the tremendous impact of COVID-19 on LTCFs. In addition a correlation between LTCFs and undiagnosed cases as well as effects of health system dysfunction is also observed. Our results confirm that LTCFs did not play a protective role on older adults during the pandemic, but the higher the number of elderly people living in LTCFs the greater the increase of both general and COVID-19 related mortality. We also observed that the handling of the crises in LTCFs hampered an efficient tracing of COVID-19 spread and promoted the increase of deaths not directly attributed to SARS-CoV-2.
The knowledge of thermophysical properties of liquid Co-Si alloys is a key requirement for manufacturing of composite materials by infiltration method. Despite this need, the experimental and predicted property data of the Co-Si system are scarce and often inconsistent between the various sources. In the present work the mixing behaviour of Co-Si melts has been analyzed through the study of the concentration dependence of various thermodynamic, surface (surface tension and surface composition) and structural properties (concentration fluctuations in the long-wavelength limit and chemical short-range order parameter) in the framework of the Compound Formation Model (CFM) and Quasi Chemical Approximation for regular solutions (QCA). In addition, the surface tension of the Co 22.5 Si 77.5 (in at %) eutectic alloy, that is proposed to be used as the infiltrant, has been measured by the pendant drop method at temperatures ranging from 1593 to 1773 K. The results obtained were discussed with respect to both, temperature and concentration, and subsequently compared with the model predictions and literature data.
Molecular dynamics computer simulations of various symmetrical Lennard-Jones (LJ) models are used to elucidate how the excess volume in dense binary liquids is related to the microscopic interactions between the particles. Both fully miscible systems and systems with a liquid-liquid phase separation are considered by varying systematically the parameters of the LJ potentials. The phase diagrams with the critical points of the demixing systems are determined by means of Monte Carlo simulations in the semigrandcanonical ensemble. The different LJ models are investigated by computing Bhatia-Thornton structure factors, enthalpy of mixing, and excess volume. For the demixing systems, the LJ models show a positive enthalpy of mixing while it is negative for the systems without miscibility gap. In contrast to that, the excess volume can be negative and positive for both demixing and fully miscible systems. This behavior is explained in terms of the interplay between the repulsive and attractive terms in the LJ potential. Whereas repulsions dominate the packing of particles as reflected by the number-density structure factor, the chemical ordering and thus the concentration structure factor are strongly affected by attractive interactions, leading to the "anomalies" of the excess volume.
