The effect of some Sitona spp.‐Larvae on leguminous plants. This report presents study of S. hispidulus (F.), S. humeralis Steph., S. lineatus L. on the following leguminous plants: red‐clover, alfalfa, pea, bean and broad bean grown in flower pots (14 cm diameter) under greenhouse conditions. The plants were infested at deferent levels (25, 50 and 100 eggs per plant) by eggs laid on the same day and burried at a depth of 2 cm around the plant roots. The effect of larvae on: the number of leaves, green and dry weight of the plants, their length, the surface area of the leaflets, the number of bacterial nodules and the nitrogen content of the infested plants was compared with proper controls. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that there is an economically significant effect of these larvae on some of these leguminous plants. An explanation of the direct and indirect effects is discussed. T. positiven Beeinflussungen kommen in Frage: a. direkte Wirkungen der Larven z.
Summary By comparing the fluctuations in the population levels of Empoasca spp. during two years (1963 and 1964) and at two localities (Shoubra El‐Kheima and Bahteem) in U.A.R. the following remarks could be drawn: The population level was distinctly higher in 1963 than in 1964 (certain climatic factors were found to be partly responsible for this difference as shown later). The adults start on the cotton plant 2 weeks earlier, on the average, before the nymphs; with the peaks of these insects abundance generally occurring between early August and mid‐September. The percentages of females in the samples were fairly high (100%) at the beginning of the season (April), then dropped to 50 percent level or even less during the following months (ranging 22–47% during September). The estimation of the number of broods of adult jassids was based on the weekly counts of the insects during the two seasons of 1963 and 1964 at Shoubra El‐Kheima. The obtained results indicated that Empoasca had an average of 10 overlapping generations on cotton (i. e. between early April and mid‐September). Table 3 (in the text) summarizes the approximate durations of these generations. The length of the nymphal and adult stages of E. distinguenda Paoli and sex ratio within the adults were preliminarily determined by a laboratory experiment in which the insect was bred at 24° C and 64 % relative humidity using two hosts, viz. Cotton and Castor‐oil plants. The results showed that the average length of the nymphal stage was 6.9 days on Castor‐oil plant leaves and 8.8 days on Cotton leaves. On both hosts the insect demonstrated 5 nymphal instars, each defined by a moult. The hosts had no apparent influence on the longevity of either the adult males or females. The life‐length was 13 days on an average for the males and 18.5 days for the females. The sex ratio was approximately 1:1 in the different treatments. The statistical formula of the partial regression analysis termed the “C‐multipliers” was adopted to verify the simultanous effect of the three climatic factors: the daily mean temperature, the average relative humidity and the daily duration of sunshine in hours, on the weekly fluctuations in the number of jassid‐nymphs. The results indicated that the tested factors had no influence on the jassid populations in 1963 but were responsible for nearly 35% of the populations variability in 1964. Bearing in mid the fact that during 1963 the jassid population was markedly higher than in 1964, the last result was thus explained in view of the following ecological statement: “The strong effect of a certain factor in one season means that the factor was beyond its optimal range for the insect, otherwise its effect would have been hardly detected.”If considered separately, however, the daily mean temperature (average of the factor during the 2 weeks preceding the sample) was, by far, the most important factor of the three in this respect.
The damage caused by Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) infestation in stored wheat was much greater if the wheat was stored as ears than if it was threshed and stored as grains. Throughout a storage period of 10 months from harvest time, the average level of infestation was found to be 60.75 and 23.25 per cent in stored ears and grains of wheat respectively. S. cerealella infestation caused also a considerable change in some important chemical and physical properties of the stored wheat. The reducing sugars and the non‐reducing sugars increased by about 140% and 113% respectively compared to the undamaged wheat. Starch, total protein, wet and dry gluten and ash contents, on the other hand, decreased by about 13, 38, 48, 45 and 23 per cent respectively. The fermentation time in the dough from the damaged wheat was 20 minutes from than for the control (undamaged). The water content was increased by about 14% in infested grains.
