The annihilation of positrons in two atomic and four molecular gases has been investigated as a function of applied static electric field strength for various gas densities at room temperature. In all cases, the equilibrium free positron annihilation rate, and hence the Zef parameter, were found to decrease with increasing electric field strength, although this decrease was less marked for the atomic gases at higher densities. The values of Zef obtained for each gas are discussed and compared with previous experimental measurements and calculations where available.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
