Indonesia is the fifth largest cocoa-producing country in the world, and an increase in cocoa farming efficiency can help farmers to increase their per capita income and reduce poverty in rural areas of this country. This research evaluated the efficiency of Indonesian cocoa farms using a non-parametric approach. The results revealed that the majority of cocoa farms are operated relatively inefficiently. The average technical and allocative efficiencies (0.82 and 0.46, respectively) of these cocoa farms demonstrated that there is potential for improvement. The potential cost reductions range from 36 to 76%, with an average of 60%, if farmers practice efficiently. The technical and allocative efficiencies and cocoa farm economies are affected by the use of quality seeds, organic fertilizers, frequency of extension and training of farm managers, access to bank credit and the market, the participation of women, and the farm manager’s gender. An increase in the output would increase farmers’ income and reduce poverty in rural areas. This research suggests that the availability of extension and training provided to farmers as well as support for women farmer groups should be increased. Credit programs are also important for cocoa farmers, so policymakers should develop programs that make production credit more accessible for farmers, especially through cooperatives and banks.
Farmer Trade Rate (NTP) is a price comparison received by farmers at the price paid by farmers, which is one indicator measure the welfare of farmers. The analysis of NTP research, has been conducted (Budi, 2015; BPS, 2013; Simatupang, 2007;Mokuwa, 2013; Jhung Ahn, 2016) note that low NTP is affected by production, household consumption, Selling of rice and the use of superior seeds. Despite efforts to improve NTP has not been done, so too In Tolitoli. The result is difficult to know the level of farmers' welfare in terms of the size of NTP obtained by farmers. So to increase the NTP used agricultural intensification by using organic fertilizer, which can increase NTP. The purpose to know the factors that affect (NTP), the magnitude of the increase in NTP improve the welfare of farmers, and comparisons of NTP users of organic and inorganic fertilizers. This study uses primary data obtained from farmers through direct interviews using a prepared list of questions. Farmer of respondents was taken by using slovin method so that determined big sample of rice farmer farmer as many as 117 people apply intensification by using organic fertilizer. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The result of the research showed that the influence of NTP, the Food Consumption Exchange Rate (NTKP) and the Production Factor Exchange Rate (NTFP) contributed 86.7% and significantly to the increase of NTP. Increased NTP of Organic Fertilizer has implication to farmer's prosperity. Organic fertilizer users obtain higher NTP than inorganic fertilizer users. Can be concluded intensification system by using organic fertilizer can increase NTP.
Industrialization and income inequality is a crucial issue in developing countries. This paper analyzes the level of income inequality in Morowali and Banggai Regencies, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Inequality income is proxied by Gini, Williamson and Theil (GWT) indices. The Gini coefficient was calculated based on data obtained from questionnaires distributed to 150 households. The Williamson index and Theil index were calculated by using the data of gross domestic per capita regional income. The results reveal that the regional income inequality of Morowali and Banggai Regency increased when the economic growth of both regions experienced a significant increase, when the large mining industry began to operate in both areas. The manufacturing and mining industries in have succeeded in shifting the dominance of agriculture sector. The level of income inequality among households and regional has reached a moderate level and tends to fluctuate. Meanwhile, the level of income distribution between regions within regencies is relatively low. The government should consider the impact of industrial presence in areas originally sustained by the agrarian sector in relation to income distribution. Second, the preparation of skilled and educated local workers in facing the industrialization era needs to be conducted
The objective of this study was to present empirical evidence about the sustainability of cocoa farming in Indonesia and how decisions are made in producing cocoa beans. This study used a survey method involving a questionnaire for collecting data. The results showed that the sustainability of cocoa farming was determined by weak sustainable ecological factors (46.07%), moderately sustainable socioeconomic factors (54.43%), moderately sustainable technological factors (55.95%), moderately sustainable factors that help farmers in cocoa farming (59.60%), and weak sustainable factors in cocoa farming families' futures (47.52%). To increase the sustainability of cocoa farming, the current study found that farmer education, cocoa crop rejuvenation, cocoa pest and disease control, cleanliness and quality of cocoa beans, cocoa productivity, institutions, extension, technology, credit availability, and stability of cocoa bean prices are the most important factors to be improved.
