Der Boden ist das Hauptproduktionsmittel in der Landwirtschaft. Auf ihm werden die Nutzpflanzen angebaut, die entweder direkt der menschlichen Ernährung zugute kommen oder über den tierischen Organismus veredelt werden. Die Abfallprodukte der Viehhaltung dienen der Erhaltung und Verbesserung der Bodenfruchtbarkeit. Alle Bemühungen um die Erhaltung und Verbesserung der Bodenfruchtbarkeit hängen von den gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen ab, unter denen die Bodennutzung erfolgt. In dieser Hinsicht hat der Boden seine Geschichte, die wesentliche Aufschlüsse über den Zustand der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion in den einzelnen sozial-ökonomischen Formationen gibt. Im Feudalismus verlief diese Geschichte anders als in den vorhergehenden und folgenden Gesellschaftsordnungen. 1 Der Umfang des Bodens, der landwirtschaftlich genutzt wird (landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche = LN) und der Intensitätsgrad der Bodennutzung bestimmen weitgehend die Zusammensetzung und die Quantität der Nahrungsmittel, die einem Volke zur Verfügung stehen. Die Nahrungsmittelversorgung verändert sich in Abhängigkeit von der gesamten volkswirtschaftlichen Entwicklung und hing im Spätfeudalismus stärker als heute von der Bevölkerungs-bewegung ab. Im Spätfeudalismus machte die Warenproduktion beträchtliche Fortschritte. Die Zahl der im Gewerbe tätigen Personen wuchs. Sie bestimmen an der Säte der zur Herrschaft strebenden Klasse Richtung und Intensität der Revolution mit und bilden deren Massenbasis. Die große Bedeutung, die die Bauernbewegung für den Verlauf der neuzeitlichen Revolutionen hat, veranlaßte die Geschichtsforschung, sich mit ihr zu befassen. Man kann aber nicht behaupten, daß dieser Gegenstand bereits umfassend untersucht worden sei. Die Lücken sind unübersehbar, und das theoretische Defizit ist beachtlich. Dem interdisziplinären Zentrum für vergleichende Revolutionsforschung in Leipzig ist deshalb dafür zu danken, sich der Rolle der Bauern in der bürgerlichen Revolution angenommen zu haben. Die Bemühungen des Arbeitskreises, besonders seines Leiters, Manfred Kossok, führten zur Herausgabe des vorliegenden Sammelbandes, der 26 Beiträge von 27 mit der Materie bestens vertrauten Forschern enthält. Die Beiträge umfassen den Zeitraum von 1517/25 bis 1910 und behandeln vorwiegend die bürgerlichen Revolutionen in den europäischen Staaten. Erstmalig ist ein repräsentativer Überblick über den erreichten Forschungs-und Erkenntnisstand (bis 1980) eines der wichtigsten Probleme der bürgerlichen Revolution vorhanden: die Agrarfrage als soziale Kernfrage. Die Agrarfrage und deren Lösung steht in einem engen sachlichen Zusammenhang mit der seit einigen Jahrzehnten international und national intensiv diskutierten Problematik der Transition vom Feudalismus zum Kapitalismus.
