2Y los he visto a esosyankees, en sus abrumadoras ciudades de hierro y piedray las horas que entre ellos he vivido las he pasado con una vaga angustia. Pareciame sentir la opresion de una montafa, sentia respirar en un pais de ciclopes, comedores de came cruda, herreros bestiales, habitadores de casas de mastodontes. Colorados, pesados, groseros, van por sus calles empujandose y rozandose animalmente, a la caza del dollar. El ideal de esos calibanes esta circunscrito a la bolsa y a la fAbrica. Comen, comen, calculan, beben whisky y hacen millones. Cantan iHome, sweet home! y su hogar es unacuentacorriente, un banjo, unnegro y una pipa. Enemigos de toda idealidad, son en su progreso apopldtico, perpetuos espejos de aumento; pero su Emerson bien calificado esta como luna de Carlyle; su Whitman con sus versiculos a hacha, es un profeta dem6crata, al uso del Tio Sam; y su Poe,' su gran Poe, pobre cisne borracho de pena y de alcohol, fue el mArtir de su sueflo en un pais en donde jamas sera comprendido. En cuanto a Lanier, 4 se salva de ser un poeta para pastores protestantes y para bucaneros y cowboys, por la gota latina que brilla en su nombre.' El Tiempo, Buenos Aires, 20 de mayo de 1898. El articulo tambidn se public6 con el encabezado "Ruben Dario combatiente"~ en El Cojo Ilustrado de Caracas (1 de octubre de 1898) cuya copia, en comparacion con el texto de El Tiempo, reproducido en Escritos ineditos (1938) y el publicado en El Modernismo visto por los modernistas (1980), sirvi6 para efectos de esta edicion. He modernizado la ortografia y corregido algunos errores de las ediciones de Mapes y de Gullon que el lector que quiera comparar los tres trabajos advertiri.2 El uso de las mayusculas se reprodujo en los casos en que parecia significativo.
