A comprehensive theory of child language acquisition requires an evidential base that is representative of the typological diversity present in the world’s 7000 or so languages. However, languages are dying at an alarming rate, and the next 50 years represents the last chance we have to document acquisition in many of them. Here, we take stock of the last 45 years of research published in the four main child language acquisition journals: Journal of Child Language, First Language, Language Acquisition and Language Learning and Development. We coded each article for several variables, including (1) participant group (mono vs multilingual), (2) language(s), (3) topic(s) and (4) country of author affiliation, from each journal’s inception until the end of 2020. We found that we have at least one article published on around 103 languages, representing approximately 1.5% of the world’s languages. The distribution of articles was highly skewed towards English and other well-studied Indo-European languages, with the majority of non-Indo-European languages having just one paper. A majority of the papers focused on studies of monolingual children, although papers did not always explicitly report participant group status. The distribution of topics across language categories was more even. The number of articles published on non-Indo-European languages from countries outside of North America and Europe is increasing; however, this increase is driven by research conducted in relatively wealthy countries. Overall, the vast majority of the research was produced in the Global North. We conclude that, despite a proud history of crosslinguistic research, the goals of the discipline need to be recalibrated before we can lay claim to truly a representative account of child language acquisition.

Although peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation (PBSCT) has assumed a growing role in the treatment of multiple myeloma, very few studies have examined the functional and quality-of-life changes experienced by myeloma patients in the transplant setting. Multiple myeloma is characterized by a range of debilitating physical and psychosocial symptoms. However, supportive care needs for patients with this disease are often overlooked or managed only episodically. The current study pilot-tested an interdisciplinary supportive care program designed to provide screening and identify patients at risk early in the course of care. Participants in this pilot project were 61 patients with hematological disorders, predominantly multiple myeloma (85.3%), evaluated during their initial workup. Mean time since diagnosis was 7.4 months. Participants were interviewed by an advanced-practice nurse and completed standardized measures of heath-related quality of life (SF-12), fatigue (POMS-Fatigue), nutritional risk (PG-SGA), pain (Brief Pain Inventory), emotional functioning (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and sexual concerns (FACIT). Results indicated that difficulties were prevalent across multiple functional domains; 61.4% of patients displayed significant nutritional deficits. Physical functioning was below age-adjusted national norms for 53.5%. Moderate-to-severe fatigue was reported by 39.0%, and one third experienced clinically significant levels of pain, impaired daily functioning associated with pain, and emotional distress. A similar proportion of respondents (33.9%) reported disrupted sexual functioning and difficulty with body image. Findings suggest that early, systematic screening is feasible in a busy transplant center. The prevalence of symptoms highlights the importance of providing screening and proactive intervention for multiple myeloma patients early in the course of treatment and even prior to beginning protocols for high-dose therapy and transplantation.

It is a common finding across languages that young children have problems in understanding patient-initial sentences. We used Tagalog, a verb-initial language with a reliable voice-marking system and highly frequent patient voice constructions, to test the predictions of several accounts that have been proposed to explain this difficulty: the frequency account, the Competition Model, and the incremental processing account. Study 1 presents an analysis of Tagalog child-directed speech, which showed that the dominant argument order is agent-before-patient and that morphosyntactic markers are highly valid cues to thematic role assignment. In Study 2, we used a combined selfpaced listening and picture verification task to test how Tagalog-speaking adults and 5-and 7-year-old children process reversible transitive sentences. Results showed that adults performed well in all conditions, while children's accuracy and listening times for the first noun phrase indicated more difficulty in interpreting patient-initial sentences in the agent voice compared to the patient voice. The patient voice advantage is partly explained by both the frequency account and incremental processing account. We report on two experiments that investigated the acquisition of the Tagalog symmetrical voice system, a typologically rare feature of Western Austronesian languages in which there are more than one basic transitive construction and no preference for agents to be syntactic subjects. In the experiments, 3-, 5-, and 7-year-old Tagalog-speaking children and adults completed a structural priming task that manipulated voice and word order, with the uniqueness of Tagalog allowing us to tease apart priming of thematic role order from that of syntactic roles. Participants heard a description of a picture showing a transitive action, and were then asked to complete a sentence of an unrelated picture using a voice-marked verb provided by the experimenter. Our results show that children gradually acquire an agent-before-patient preference, instead of having a default mapping of the agent to the first noun position. We also found an earlier mastery of the patient voice verbal and nominal marker configuration (patient is the subject), suggesting that children do not initially map the agent to the subject. Children were primed by thematic role but not syntactic role order, suggesting that they prioritize mapping of the thematic roles to sentence positions.

This paper briefly presents the current situation of bilingualism in the Philippines, specifically that of Tagalog-English bilingualism. More importantly, it describes the process of adapting the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (LITMUS- MAIN) to Tagalog, the basis of Filipino, which is the country’s national language. Finally, the results of a pilot study conducted on Tagalog-English bilingual children and adults (N=27) are presented. The results showed that Story Structure is similar across the two languages and that it develops significantly with age.
