This study assessed the training needs of the 25 selected student journalists who responded to the self-administered survey questionnaires using the purposive sampling technique. Editors-in-chief of the main and external campuses were also interviewed to validate the results of the questionnaires. As perceived by the respondents, results showed that leadership and management, editorial writing, editing and proofreading, and video taking were highly needed. Results demonstrated that student journalists prefer to cover events that they are concerned with student welfare and the law and governance which are evident in the dominant activities of the campuses. However, some events that were rarely represented by these concerned students involved research and development, production, and gender and development activities. The results of this study served as one of the bases in crafting the training program of the aforementioned student journalists. This study then recommended the following training program. There is a need to craft a training program that prioritize the topics on leadership and management, editorial writing, editing and proofreading, video making, and professionalism in campus journalism. These training program was then implemented during the first semester of the AY 2020-2021 online amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This study aimed to analyze and evaluate the reading comprehension component in the selected Grades 7 and 8 English and Filipino textbooks used by the selected private schools in Cebu City. Content analysis and text analysis were used as research designs in evaluating the 21 textbooks used during the academic year 2012-2013 and academic year 2013-2014. Results in English textbooks revealed that among the competencies, strategies predominated among schema building, literary texts, and expository texts whereas in Grade 7 & 8 Filipino textbooks, schema building and strategies predominated. Grade 7 & Grade 8 English Textbooks used by USC South Campus and Sacred Heart of Jesus - Hijas de Jesus met the K to 12 Guidelines for reading comprehension set by the Department of Education. Moreover, Grade 7 & Grade 8 Filipino textbooks used by St. Theresa’s College only met the standards. Consequently, these textbooks are recommended to be used for Grade 7 and Grade 8 students in private schools.
Anchored on Evans’ professional development (PD) model, this study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a professional development program on designing participatory action research (PAR) projects for basic education teachers. The teachers are from Junior and Senior High School teaching English, Mathematics, and Science. The PD program consisted of ten in-person training sessions and virtual consultations which happened in between training on AR problem conceptualization and methodology for a 14-week period. Using the mixed-methods sequential explanatory (QUAN à qual) design, the study started with a professional needs assessment participated by 18 teachers from a secondary school as a basis for the planned PD program. The teachers underwent training sessions to develop a group or participatory AR proposal as evidence of their professional growth and program outcome. At the end of the program, the English, Mathematics, and Science teachers, respectively, developed and presented their AR proposals on the (a) design and evaluation of a gamified-based instruction towards improving vocabulary skill, (b) video-based instruction in teaching basic concepts of probability, and (c) investigating the effect of contextualized learning materials in developing students’ conceptual understanding of atoms. The post-assessment results, supported by interviews, revealed that the teachers displayed behavioural, attitudinal, and intellectual developments in AR. Based on the Department of Education’s criteria for evaluating PAR proposals, all three proposals were rated acceptable for implementation by a panel of evaluators. In conclusion, the PD design and evaluation framework were important factors that enabled the participating teachers to transform their AR competencies toward developing PAR proposals for improving teaching and research in their schools.
This study determined and analyzed the graduates’ evaluation of the master of arts in applied linguistics program on their perspectives on the contribution of the program to the present work demands, competencies in their work to further advance career and program enhancement. This study used the quantitative-qualitative research methods by using the modified self-administered questionnaires based on Schomburg primarily and interviews. The data revealed that the graduates perceived the relevance, appropriateness, and satisfaction of their program to their work. The graduates were also trained in terms of writing and presenting reports, critical thinking, managing their time and publishing. However, the program needed to enhance the skills in publication which could be attributed to the lack of internal motivation to publish one’s research output and availability of journals for publication. Thus, this study implies that there is a need to strengthen the research agenda of the department. It is indeed recommended that the students should be required by faculty members to submit their final papers for review and publication to a selected journal and publishing the master’s theses before and after earning the master of arts in applied linguistics (MAAL) program should be encouraged, reinforced, and practiced. A scholarly journal could also be created.

This paper aimed at clarifying and further establishing the Cebuano – Bisaya language through a descriptive analysis of the Cebuano-Bisaya utterances of Grade Two pupils from Don Bosco Technology Center during their Mother Tongue class. Moreover, the study determined the Typological Linguistic Universals by Greenberg (1963) applicable to Cebuano, Tanangkingsing’s (2009) Nonverbal clauses, and Pesirla’s (2010) Verb Predicate forms and Content Words existent in the utterances. The study was a descriptive analysis of two regular classroom sessions or two 40-45 minute class between the Mother Tongue teacher and 45 pupils who were all boys. Interesting results were found such as the use of only three kinds of nonverbal clause, the dominance of nouns in their utterances, the existence of all kinds of verb predicates, and the application of 3 out of 6 typological linguistic universals. The results were taken from a teacher – pupils discourse under the supervision of the said academe. Keywords: Cebuano, clauses, linguistic universals, typology, utterances

This study analyzed the students’ learning experiences in the Communication Program from a university in the Philippines. A descriptive method was used in analyzing the data gathered from the researcher-made questionnaires and exit interviews of the perceived fourth year student-respondents. Using categories of students’ learning experiences, findings revealed that experiential learning and social climate contribute mostly to their best and worst experiences in the university. Furthermore, aside from problem solving and application of theories into practice, quality of lectures, and discussion, three themes surfaced particularly related to the self, faculty, and university. As learners are encouraged to actively participate in the teaching-learning process and continue to make sense of their identity in a learning environment, the higher education institutions also have equal responsibilities of providing conditions that are conducive to achieving target learning outcomes. Such conditions comprise the schools’ facilities and information technology infrastructure, and carefully designed instructional packages including quality instructional materials and competent teachers. This study provides recommendations in redesigning the Communication Program based on the students' learning experiences.
