This paper examines the relationship between the level of integrated reporting (IR) based on the extent of adoption of the International Integrated Reporting Framework (IIRF) and the firm value (a proxy for value relevance of IR) in Sri Lanka, where the adoption of IR is a voluntary exercise. Using a comprehensive disclosure checklist, 117 integrated reports were content-analyzed, and then two regression models assessed the value relevance of IR disclosure. The study notes an increasing trend toward the adoption of IIRF in the preparation of integrated reports overall, as well as of each content element of IIRF. However, this rising trend has not significantly impacted the firm value by itself. Hence, this study’s findings do not support the enlightened stakeholder’s view on the subject of IR in Sri Lanka. Instead, it shows a significant positive relationship with the firm value when combined with the information on earnings (earnings per share), indicating that IIRF-compliant IR improves the value relevance of accounting information. This study offers insights for policymakers, professional accounting bodies, and practitioners on how investors make use of the information disclosed in integrated reports in their decision-making.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the coverage of and trends in reporting content elements in the integrated reports of the Sri Lankan companies following the International Integrated Reporting Framework (IIRF). Design/methodology/approach Based on a comprehensive checklist developed on the content elements of the IIRF, 171 corporate integrated reports were content-analyzed over a period of three years. The results were theorized subsequently using the legitimacy theory. Findings The study identifies that the extent of and trend in the coverage of content elements of the IIRF have increased during the period under consideration despite some under-addressed areas. It indicates that Sri Lankan companies are making progress in the preparation of integrated reports in line with the IIRF, which provides evidence in support of both strategic and institutional perspectives of the legitimacy theory because of the proactive actions taken by managers to acquire legitimacy along with the other normative and mimetic pressures available in the IR landscape. Originality/value This is one of the first studies that evaluate the compliance of IR adopters with the IIRF overtime in the entirety of a single country. It also develops a comprehensive index to capture the disclosure requirements of IR and extends the analysis to a voluntary context using both strategic and institutional perspectives of the legitimacy theory.

Purpose This paper aims to explore how the integrated thinking of a chief executive officer (CEO) impacts the management’s orchestration of the six capitals to create value in an organization. Design/methodology/approach Following a case study approach, data was gathered on two business organizations in Sri Lanka through interviews, focus group discussions and documentary analyzes. Thematic and cross-case analyzes were used in analyzing the data based on an analytical framework that was developed using systems and resource orchestration theories. Findings The study finds that the integrated thinking perspective of the CEO determines which capitals to embrace in the pursuit of value creation by an organization. A broader perspective on the integrated thinking of the CEO can lead to a sustainable perspective for value creation focusing on integrated corporate responsibility. On the contrary, a constrained perspective of integrated thinking can lead to a business case perspective for value creation that focuses mainly on the key areas of responsibility extended for operational efficiency. These different perspectives result in differences in value creation in organizations over time. Practical implications The capitals embraced in the integrated thinking perspective of a CEO should be translated into objectives, strategies and performance measurement and implemented at every level of the company to create value. This perspective of a CEO can be institutionalized through the adoption of accredited management systems. To foster value creation, managers should use a variety of information technology platforms and internal networks. Originality/value This is one of the first studies that explore how the perception of integrated thinking of the CEO impacts value creation in an organization through a combination of resource orchestration and systems thinking theory lenses.

Aortic dissection in pregnancy is a lethal cardiovascular complication in women with Marfan syndrome. The course of the treatment would be decided upon by the size of aortic root dilation. We report a case where the unawareness of the diagnosis of Marfan syndrome antenatally led to disastrous post partum consequences even after an uneventful childbirth.

Porto pulmonary hypertension is the presence of pulmonary arterial hypertension in patients with advanced liver disease and portal hypertension. It affects minority of advanced liver disease patients without a significant correlation between hepatic impairment and severe porto pulmonary hypertension. It is a rare complication of portal hypertension following successful portoenterostomy. We present a case of a seventeen-year-old male with a past history of Kasai procedure for congenital biliary atresia, presenting with severe pulmonary hypertension as a complication of cirrhosis. He was defaulted during childhood follow up and was asymptomatic during last 17 years which has led to silent progression of secondary biliary cirrhosis. Hence this highlights the importance of long-term follow up after Kasai procedure.

There is a growing demand for external assurance on integrated reporting despite the challenges involved in the assurance process. However, the rationale for obtaining external assurance on integrated reports is mostly unknown, and how it leads to organisational changes is not sufficiently explored. Thus, this study offers a conceptual model to explore the rationale behind obtaining external assurance on integrated reporting, its impacts on internal assurance practices, justifications for modifications made to the internal assurance practices, and its implications on external assurance practices. This conceptual model, grounded on the framing and institutional theories, postulates that companies tend to assure their integrated reports externally as a response to various isomorphic pressures. The external assurance of an integrated report may warrant modifications to companies' current internal assurance practices. Companies make these modifications based on different rationales, which can also have implications on external assurance practices. This paper also discusses how researchers and practitioners can use this model.
