Este estudo tomou como ponto de partida a Reforma de Capanema, em vigor no Brasil nos anos de 1942 a 1961, pela Lei Orgânica do Ensino Secundário, a fim de analisar seus reflexos nas práticas educativas discentes. O texto apresenta os desdobramentos de tal legislação notadamente no Atheneu Sergipense, centrando-se no papel do aluno não apenas como partícipe do cotidiano escolar, mas como produtor deste. O processo investigativo seguiu as recomendações de Viñao Frago (2000), que englobam três pontos de vista: o teórico, o legal e o real. As fontes recorridas neste estudo foram: peças legislativas que determinaram ações efetivas no colégio, ofícios e, sobretudo, jornais estudantis e comerciais que revelaram práticas discentes de destaque, como a organização de agremiações, redação de jornais, criação, direção e encenação de peças teatrais, apresentações musicais, enfim, manifestações artístico-culturais, recreativas e de formação complementar, elaboradas pela classe estudantil sergipana, fomentadas naquela “Casa de Educação Literária”.
Criado o Lyceu de Sergipe, em 1847, com uma reunião de cadeiras isoladas do ensino secundário em São Cristóvão, a instituição funcionou até o ano de 1855, quando da mudança da capital da Província para Aracaju, enfrentando uma série de problemas no dia a dia das suas práticas. Falta de docentes, discentes, pedido de isenção de taxas, um pasquim que culminou na suspensão do estudante, afastamento de professores, recorrentes solicitações de utensílios e móveis para o cotidiano do trabalho administrativo, bem como objetos para as aulas ali ministradas. Neste sentido, o objetivo do presente texto consiste em analisar os objetos solicitados para as aulas de diferentes cadeiras, como também os pedidos de materiais para o funcionamento administrativo da instituição, registrados no Livro da Correspondência do Lyceu de Sergipe no período de 1848 a 1851. No exame do referido documento destacam-se: o diminuto e precário espaço para a realização das aulas, a escassez de materiais e os constantes pedidos dos professores do material necessário para a realização das suas aulas, além dos vestígios de práticas educativas do ensino secundário localizados por meio dos objetos solicitados para as aulas da instituição oitocentista.
