Various teaching pedagogies have been used in hospitality programs. In this study, a new innovative teaching method has been implemented for TVET students in Sungai Petani Community College. This study aims to examine the attitudes and satisfaction of hospitality TVET students towards the use of the Front Office Tasks Simulator (FOTS) as an innovative teaching tool. This study is a descriptive study using a quantitative approach and data were collected through questionnaires answered by respondents. Purposive sampling techniques was used to select all hospitality education students in their 3rd semester year of college. In total, 22 students of the Hospitality Operations Program semester 3 participated in this study. The results found that students' attitude toward using FOTS as a whole was at a high level (M = 4.83, SD = .14) and students' satisfaction using FOTS as a whole was also at a high level (M = 4.66, SD = .52). Pearson Correlation Test found that there was a significant relationship between students' attitudes and satisfaction in using FOTS as an innovative teaching tool for Front Office subjects (r = .835, p <.01). In conclusion, the use of innovative teaching tools -Front Office Tasks Simulator (FOTS) can increase students' understanding and satisfaction of learning the procedures of Doorman, Bellmen, and Concierge, reservation, check-in, checkout, payment of guest bills. For further research, researchers could evaluate the effectiveness of the simulation tool for community college graduates who work in a hotel or related hospitality industry after this simulation experience.
Commercial Foodservice Restaurant simulation class is a course to intensification students' knowledge in learning and practicing about cooking and serving food and beverages. This paper aims to identify the level of students’ knowledge enhancement, level of work experience, level of self-efficacy, and level of realism of simulation towards the use of Commercial Foodservice Restaurant simulation class. A total of 123 students from semester 4 and semester 5 of Diploma in Food Services (Halal Practice), Polytechnic of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin were selected as a purposive sampling to answer the questionnaire. The results reveal that mean scores for work experience, self-efficacy and realism of simulation were at a high level. Overall, it can be concluded that the Commercial Foodservice Restaurant simulation class is very important for students to improve the knowledge, work experience, self-efficacy and skills in the simulation class in the future either at the academic level or in the real industry. The results of the study also show a positive impact among institutional students, and it is hope that this study can also benefit students and researchers who need to study about the programme of Commercial Foodservice Restaurant simulation class. In the future study, researchers may use pre and post test to study on effectiveness of using Restaurant simulation class.
Artikel ini melaporkan pembangunan "FOTOKIT – Front Office Learning Toolkit," satu alat bantu mengajar yang dibina dengan dua versi (manual dan atas talian dengan menggunakan Google Spreadsheet dan telah ditambahbaik dengan membina sistem tersebut dengan menggunakan laman sesawang yang merangkumi ciri sistem hotel yang mudah bagi memudahkan pelajar belajar dan memahami sistem hotel. Di kolej komuniti, alat bantu mengajar bagi subjek Kaunter Hadapan (Front Office) memang terhad. Dengan adanya FOTOKIT sebagai alat bantu mengajar interaktif, ianya boleh membantu pelajar memahami lebih baik dan memudahkan pelajar membuat praktikal mengenai prosedur penempahan, daftar masuk dan daftar keluar, dan pembayaran bil tetamu. FOTOKIT ini telah digunakan oleh pelajar sewaktu proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) bagi modul Kaunter Hadapan untuk pelajar-pelajar semester 3, Program Sijil Operasi Perhotelan. Hasil dapatan terhadap FOTOKIT ini melalui borang soal selidik, didapati ianya dapat bantu pelajar memahami proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran untuk prosedur penempahan, daftar masuk, daftar keluar dan pembayaran bil tetamu. Setelah menggunakan FOTOKIT ini, pelajar memberi komen bahawa FOTOKIT ini sangat membantu, sangat menarik dan memudahkan pelajar mempelajari, memahami dan melakukan amali prosedur penempahan, daftar masuk dan daftar keluar, dan pembayaran bil tetamu.
