ABSTRACTThe research aims to verify the nature of IE, supporting the sample of 146 employees of a pharmaceutical industry that operates in the state of Piaui, through the Wong scale and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS). Procedures of descriptive and exploratory factor analysis for interpretation and analysis of data were used, with software support called Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). It was evident, in descending order of significance, that Factor 1 "To recognize their emotions and others," Factor 2 "regulation of own emotions," Factor 3 "Using emotions to facilitate the performance"; Factor 4 "Understanding their emotions" and Factor 5 "Understanding one's emotions" satisfactorily explain the IE of respondents. The volume of empirical research, especially at the national level relating IE with work generated limitation of the study because the findings bring relevant relationships, but that still require further development and replication. Statistical chosen expands the original findings of the scale of Wong and Law (WLEIS), but refers to a specific context, limiting its generalization. New studies could enhance the results by further tests or through data triangulation, encouraging assessment of the factors presented by factor analysis and theoretical organization of these factors around the knowledge of IE.
