Desde la perspectiva del recurso hídrico, el Pico de Tancítaro representa una riqueza hidrológica para la región y el principal elemento para su desarrollo económico. Los registros climáticos instrumentales son muy cortos y los estudios dendroclimáticos que permitan analizar su variabilidad en el tiempo son nulos. En este contexto, este trabajo se planteó como objetivos: a) reconstruir la variabilidad de la precipitación para el Pico de Tancítaro con base en los anillos de crecimiento de Abies religiosa y b) determinar frecuencias importantes en la variabilidad climática de la región. Mediante técnicas dendrocronológicas estándar se logró fechar al año exacto cada uno de los crecimientos de 25 muestras (p<0.05). Se reconstruyó la variabilidad de la precipitación de finales del siglo XIX a la primera década del siglo XXI (1884-2010, 127 años). Las sequías más intensas reconstruidas para el oeste del estado de Michoacán se registraron en los periodos 1890-1896, 1948-1957, 1968-1971, 1982-1989 y 1998-2010. El intervalo de tiempo 1960-1966 representa el periodo más húmedo de los últimos 127 años. Se identificó que la recurrencia de intensas sequías multianuales (1891-1896, 1942-1956 y 1998-2010) es de 42 a 43 años, mismas que están relacionadas con frecuencias significativas (p<0.05) de 42 años.
Una serie dendrocronológica climáticamente sensitiva de anillo total se desarrolló en Isla Guadalupe con la especie endémica ciprés de Guadalupe (Hesperocyparis guadalupensis (S. Watson) Bartel. Var. guadalupensis). La cronología comprende los últimos 205 años (1804-2008) y mostró una respuesta significativa (r = 0.45 a 0.48, p<0.0001) con cronologías de anillos de árboles procedentes de Baja California, California y Sur de Canadá, utilizadas para análisis del impacto y reconstrucción del PDO. No obstante, esta asociación fue débil con cronologías desarrolladas en la Sierra Madre Occidental, que probablemente estén influenciadas por otros fenómenos circulatorios. Se encontró una respuesta significativa con registros instrumentales (r= 0.414, p<0.0001, n = 109) y reconstruidos (r= 0.68 p<0.0001, n= 109) del PDO. La cronología se asoció significativamente con la lluvia enero-noviembre de Ensenada (r= 0.65, p<0.0005, n= 44), indicando potencial para reconstrucciones de clima. El análisis espectral de la serie dendrocronológica detectó la presencia de frecuencias significativas de 12 años a 28 años y de 50 años a 70 años, que se relacionan con el PDO; mientras que la frecuencia significativa de 6.8 años pudiera estar relacionada con ENSO. Dado que la cronología se ubica en el extremo más al sur de la influencia del PDO, esta puede ser de utilidad para determinar el área de influencia de este fenómeno y el posible impacto de otros como ENSO. La respuesta climática encontrada con esta especie, abre oportunidades para nuevas investigaciones paleoclimáticas, que a la vez son importantes para promover acciones de restauración de ecosistemas y la conservación de esta y de otras especies asociadas.
Los anillos de crecimiento de Pinus cembroides se emplearon como proxy para reconstruir la variabilidad histórica de la precipitación anual durante 159 años (1850 a 2008) en la región oriental del estado de Tlaxcala. La reconstrucción mostró alta variación interanual y entre décadas en las lluvias. Las sequías más intensas se registraron para los periodos de 1887 a 1904, de 1969 a 1975 y de 1982 a 1991; de igual manera, se detectaron lapsos con precipitaciones superiores a la media regional de 1860 a 1863, de 1867 a 1876, de 1905 a 1909, de 1934 a 1940, de 1967 a 1969, de 1981 a 1982, de 1992 a 1993 y de 2000 a 2001. De mediados del siglo XX a principios del XXI se observó una influencia positiva de la Oscilación del Sur El Niño (ENSO, por sus siglas en inglés) sobre la alteración de la precipitación en años específicos, así como en la aparición tardía del Monzón de Norteamérica (NAMS, por sus siglas en inglés), particularmente, de 1970 a 1974, de 1988 a 1989 y de 1998 a 1999, lo que provocó fuertes periodos secos, que tuvieron un impacto social y económico importante; un ejemplo claro es el que aconteció en los años 70, cuando la interacción de ambos fenómenos dio origen al agostamiento más intenso en el periodo analizado para esta zona del estado.
