The aim of the study is to value body image, the practice of physical-sport activities, and the perception of the health in school age adolescents in middle school. A non-experimental, descriptive, comparative and correlational study design is presented. The subject population of the study is a sample of 416 middle school students from the city San Nicolas de los Garza, N. L. Mexico selected by random sampling and stratified by gender and grade level, with an age between 12 and 15 years (13,14 ± 0,87), of which 216 are male and 200 are female; with an average weight of 53,63 ± 10,33 kg, a height of 1,59 ± 8,44 m and a BMI of 21 ± 3,03. The questionnaire Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-8A) was used, with 8 items and a response scale of 1 to 6 (where 1 is never and 6 is always), grouped in cut off points based on the concern of the body image: < 19 never, 19-25 slight, 26-33 moderate, >33 marked. The instrument has good psychometric properties. The statistical program SPSS v24 and LISREL were used for the analysis of the data. In general, Mexican adolescent students have an important concern for their body image, especially in women and those who perceive poor health, people who have a higher practice of physical-sports activities show a positive attitude towards their own body.
Abstract. The purpose of the study was to examine the psychometric properties and factor structure of the quality Physical Education scale from the perspective of teaching practice, translated and adapted to the Spanish and Mexican context. A quantitative study with an instrumental design is presented. The participants were 763 Physical Education teachers from Mexico with an age range of 19 to 71 years old (M = 37.89 ± 11.18); where 31.7% were women and 68.3% men. 59.4% work in schools that belong to the federal system, 33.9% to the state system and 6.7% work in private schools. The translation and adaptation to Spanish and the Mexican context of the Quality Physical Education survey was carried out. It is composed of 50 items that are answered on a scale that goes from 0 "not totally achieved" to 10 "completely achieved". It was carried out the exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) using the Kaiser-Meyer Olkin KMO correlation matrix (.97) and Bartlett's sphericity test (χ² x2= 30645.936 y gl = 990) obtaining six factors and the reduction to 46 items. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed good internal consistency and inter-factor correlations (χ2/gl = 2.98, NNFI = .98, CFI = .98 and RMSEA = .07), as well as when divided by gender, level and educational system. The instrument shows good psychometric properties to evaluate Quality Physical Education from the perspective of teaching practice in the Mexican context. Due to its characteristics, it could be used in other Spanish-speaking countries since its writing, terminology and contents are adapted to the context.
Abstract. Social networks have become an irreversible and increasingly popular phenomenon among children and adolescents. This continued use can lead to excessive use, which is conducive to an increase in sedentary lifestyles, a major public health problem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the differences by sex and school grade regarding physical activity and the use of social networks in high school students. The sample consisted of 342 high school students, 53.5% female and 46.5% male (M= 13.39; SD = 0.84) from Nuevo León. Two instruments, Uses and Gratifications of social networks in Mexican adolescents, and IPAQ-C, were applied. Forty-eight percent of the students have a low level of physical activity; and although the intensity increases in older students, the frequency of physical activity decreases as school progresses. Significant differences were recorded in the connection to social networks, favorite network, device used (p < .01) in relation to school grade; 95.3% have a connection to social networks, where 47.4% state having access at any time of the day without parental control, with boys and girls in the third grade spending more time on this activity. The most popular networks were YouTube and Facebook.
Abstract. The impact of a health program for adolescents with obesity problem was analyzed. The intervention lasted 14 weeks, consisted of three conditions (control, experimental, and experimental with phototherapy) and the indicators were measures of the metabolic profile and five dimensions of the Self-concept Inventory Form. A quasi-experimental design with pre-post measurements was applied. Control condition was only evaluated twice. An experimental group received nutritional guidance and performed physical activity. The second experimental group additionally received phototherapy sessions. Baseline differences (pretest) were analyzed, finding differences between the three conditions in triglycerides and family self-concept. Final results indicated that nutritional guidance, physical activity and phototherapy were related to improvements in the tricipital fold, triglycerides and glycemia (p < .05). The administration of any of the experimental conditions, with or without phototherapy, corresponded with better social self-concept with respect to the control group. Participation in a health program that includes nutritional guidance and physical activity can produce changes in the distribution of adiposity and social self-concept in adolescents with obesity in the short term.
Palabras claves: violencia, mujeres, grupos vulnerables, actividades físico-deportivas, escolares AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to provide teachers, students, parents, and communities with information on sports and physical activities carried out in school environments, and their impact on gender violence and vulnerable groups. Violence against women and vulnerable groups is a well-known social issue that is spread in people's day-by-day life. This situation can even be found in schools, especially against children suffering from obesity, needing special care, or being less skilled in common school tasks. After executing a diagnosis on sports and physical skills and on the aforementioned variables, recommendations are provided in order to detect the causes of violence; for example, make persons involved in violent acts consider their consequences; find measures for avoiding this type of behaviours; provide training on conflict solving methods; and educate in democratic values, tolerance and intercultural respect.
