As cultivares apresentam divergência genética. Potential to breeding and genetic divergence in popcorn cultivarsAbstract -The objective of this paper was to evaluate the potential of breeding and genetic divergence in nine tropical popcorn cultivars. The genetic divergence was estimated using multivariate analysis techniques and the cultivars were grouped based in Mahalanobis' generalized distance (MGD), using Tocher's optimization and graphic dispersion. The best cultivars concerning the yield grain above 3 ton/ha were CMS 43, IAC 112, Viçosa, CMS 42 and Branco, and to popping expansion above 24 (v/v) were IAC 112, RS 20 and Zélia. The estimates of MGD indicated the pairs genetically more distant (RS 20, Beija-flor) and (Rosa-claro, RS 20) as well as pairs genetically more similar (IAC 112, Viçosa) and (Branco, CMS 42). Tree or four genetic divergences groups were formed depending on the method. To popcorn breeding, cultivars with best potential are RS 20, Zélia, IAC 112, and Beija-flor. The cultivars show genetic divergence. The aim of this study was to evaluate methods for developing a Brazilian maize core collection. For an initial survey of the active collection, passport information, as well as characterization and evaluation of accessions, were taken into consideration, these then being divided according to geographic region and kernel-type. Multiple sampling methods were evaluated. The strategy of constant sampling generated extensive alterations in extract accession frequency. The multivariate strategy with dispersion graphs and principal components associated with the Tocher method was considered efficient for identifying the most divergent genotypes. The multivariate strategy generated greater alterations in the variance of traits. The average number of traits revealed few modifications with the various sampling strategies used. Therefore, the active collection could be considered as possessing a satisfactory amount of information for most of its accessions. Moreover, the multivariate strategy generated modifications in the variance of the traits, independent of sampling intensity.
The current study aims to study the anatomy and micromorphometry of C. brasiliense leaves in three Cerrado (savanna) vegetation-types: dense, typical and sparse) -in the municipality of Porto Nacional-TO. Samples were collected, fixed and stored in alcohol 70%. Transverse, longitudinal and paradermal sections of the median leaflet were prepared for anatomical and micromorphometric studies using standard techniques. C. brasiliense leaflets show uniestratified epidermis covered by thick cuticle on the adaxial surface and by paracytic stomata and multicellular non-glandular trichomes on the abaxial surface. The mesophyll is formed by two or three layers of palisade parenchyma adaxially and spongy parenchyma abaxially. The vascular bundle is of the collateral type and the accessory bundles show a sheath extending into the epidermides. The micromorphometric analyses pointed to significant differences in the thickness of both adaxial epidermis and spongy parenchyma in all specimens from the three vegetation-types. The highest averages were found in the leaflets of sparse cerrado plants, suggesting that environmental factors may have an influence over the plants morphological responses.
-This study aimed to characterize three natural populations of mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa) located in parts of the Cerrado in the region of Porto Nacional, State of Tocantins, as well as to evaluate phenotypic variability in individual plants based on the physicochemical properties of their fruits. Ten genotypes were selected from each population, and 20 fruits of each genotype were collected for analysis. Fruits were analyzed for transverse and longitudinal diameters, total mass, pulp mass and yield, and number and fresh mass of seeds. Two seeds were taken from each fruit for the measurement of longitudinal and transverse diameter and thickness. Furthermore, pH and soluble solids were measured in the total pulp of each genotype. Descriptive statistics were performed on the data from morphological characterization, and populations were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Dunn's test at 5% probability level. The relationship between variables was estimated by the Spearman's correlation coefficient. Phenotypic variability was verified using the principal component analysis. All three natural populations of mangabeira investigated here exhibited similar characteristics regarding fruit morphology and pH. Significant differences were detected only in the transverse diameter of the seed (Canaã had the highest value) and for total soluble solids content (Providência had the highest value). Significant correlations were found for corresponding morphological variables and pH in each population, except for several negative correlations that were observed in the Canaã population, which produced more homogeneous fruit. The Providência population presented the largest and most massive fruit. The greatest phenotypic variabilities were observed in the São Judas Tadeu and Providência populations. Keywords: Apocynaceae.
