A number of interesting books have been written and quite a number of computer packages have appeared in this area. However, the number and variety of participants in environmental decision processes and the complexity of information related to environmental problems call for more adequate and accessible forms of decision support than those that have been available to date. This gap seems to have been filled by Ron Janssen through the publication of 'Multiobjective Decision Support for Environmental Management', a book which i s accompanied by a computer package called DEFINITE.The book uses methods resulting from the literature to develop, in the first part of the book, a Multiobjective Decision Support System (MODSS) for environmental management. The aim of this system can be described by the following three objectives of decision support:1. Effective generation of information on the decision 2. Effective generation of solution (alternatives) to a 3. Provision of a good understanding of the structure and problem from available data and ideas; decision problem; content of a decision problem.
