La degradación de las tierras secas es una amenaza al bienestar de la población que habita en dicho territorio, en el cual además existen desequilibrios en torno a la histórica configuración polarizada entre tierras irrigadas y no irrigadas. En este trabajo aplicamos una metodología cualitativa para estudiar las percepciones ambientales de pequeños productores ganaderos del área no irrigada de Mendoza a fin de identificar los problemas vinculados al acceso y calidad del agua y la producción de alimentos para autoconsumo. Resaltamos la importancia de conocer la percepción ambiental de la comunidad local para definir los conflictos y desde allí realizar estudios específicos que permitan identificar las causas de la degradación. Incorporar la dimensión social durante el diseño de las medidas a implementar permitirá a la política pública reajustar sus lineamientos para mejorar los resultados obtenidos. Así como también, enriquecerá la generación de recomendaciones de manejo.
