Free Radical Reactions of Isonitriles *)It is shown that the carbenoid carbon atom of the isonitrile 2 primarily adds of 2,4,6-tritert.-butyl-phenoxyl (1) twice via a radical pathway. One of the phenoxyl radicals reacts at the oxygen atom, the other one as a p-ketomethyl radical. The resulting imidoester 5 is dehydrogenated by a further equivalent of 1 to form the new imidoester phenoxyl radical 4, which is isolated. The structure of 4 is elucidated by spectroscopy and by chemical degradation processes, leading to the known substances 3,10, and 13.
