Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are a vital part of the design process in the aerospace industry. Although reliable CFD results can be obtained with turbulence models, direct numerical simulation of complex bodies in three spatial dimensions (3D) is impracticable due to the massive amount of computational elements. For instance, a 3D direct numerical simulation of a turbulent boundary-layer over the wing of a commercial jetliner that resolves all relevant length scales using a serial CFD solver on a modern digital computer would take approximately 750 million years or roughly 20% of the earth’s age. Over the past 25 years, quantum computers have become the object of great interest worldwide as powerful quantum algorithms have been constructed for several important, computationally challenging problems that provide enormous speed-up over the best-known classical algorithms. In this paper, we adapt a recently introduced quantum algorithm for partial differential equations to Burgers’ equation and develop a quantum CFD solver that determines its solutions. We used our quantum CFD solver to verify the quantum Burgers’ equation algorithm to find the flow solution when a shockwave is and is not present. The quantum simulation results were compared to: (i) an exact analytical solution for a flow without a shockwave; and (ii) the results of a classical CFD solver for flows with and without a shockwave. Excellent agreement was found in both cases, and the error of the quantum CFD solver was comparable to that of the classical CFD solver.
The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) plays an important role in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance. Typically, the structure comprises of a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched by agglomerate catalyst layers at the anode and cathode. Optimization of various parameters in the design of MEA is, thus, essential for reducing cost and material usage, while improving cell performance. In this paper, optimization of MEA is performed using a validated two-phase PEMFC numerical model. Key MEA parameters affecting the performance of a single PEMFC are determined from sensitivity analysis and are optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The optimization is carried out at two different operating voltages. The results show that membrane thickness and membrane protonic conductivity coefficient are the most significant parameters influencing cell performance. Notably, at higher voltage (0.8 V per cell), the current density can be improved by up to 40% while, at a lower voltage (0.6 V per cell), the current density may be doubled. The results presented can be of importance for fuel cell engineers to improve the stack performance and expedite the commercialization.
Realistic wind data are essential in developing, testing, and ensuring the safety of unmanned aerial systems in operation. Alternatives to Dryden and von Kármán turbulence models are required, aimed explicitly at urban air spaces to generate turbulent wind data. We present a novel method to generate realistic wind data for the safe operation of small unmanned aerial vehicles in urban spaces. We propose a non-intrusive reduced order modeling approach to replicate realistic wind data and predict wind fields. The method uses a well-established large-eddy simulation model, the parallelized large eddy simulation model, to generate high-fidelity data. To create a reduced-order model, we utilize proper orthogonal decomposition to extract modes from the three-dimensional space and use specialized recurrent neural networks and long-term short memory for stepping in time. This paper combines the traditional approach of using computational fluid dynamic simulations to generate wind data with deep learning and reduced-order modeling techniques to devise a methodology for a non-intrusive data-based model for wind field prediction. A simplistic model of an isolated urban subspace with a single building setup in neutral atmospheric conditions is considered a test case for the demonstration of the method.
