In this paper, the measurements from OpTest FQA (fiber quality analyzer) and L&W Fiber Tester were compared on 95 TMP (thermomechanical pulp) samples from a TMP-based newsprint mill in Eastern Canada that uses mixed black spruce and balsam fir as raw material. It was found that both FQA and L&W Fiber Tester provide repeatable measurements for fiber length, fines, coarseness, curl, and kink index. However, there were significant differences in the results obtained from the two instruments. Compared to FQA, the L&W Fiber Tester measurements were on average 59% higher for the arithmetic mean fiber length and arithmetic fines content, about 6% higher for the length weighted mean fiber length, approximately 44% lower for the coarseness, and about 37% lower for the kink index.

Increasing specific energy consumption benefits the development of fibres and improves their properties. However, high intensity refining tends to shorten the fibres and produces more fines content when compared with low intensity refining. This review focuses on the influence of key variables of chip qualities and the refining process on TMP pulp and paper qualities.

A new green liquor filtration system has been installed and commissioned at the Ence pulp mill in Pontevedra, Spain. The filtration system is based on microfiltration and was developed in collaboration with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The patented method for efficient purification of green liquor decreases the non-process element (NPE) content by providing more efficient solids/liquid separation, reducing energy and chemical consumption in pulp mills and increasing production capacity by eliminating certain capacity bottlenecks. The process has been continuously tested at the Aspa Bruk Mill outside Askersund, Sweden, since 2013. The technology has proven to create nearly particulate-free green liquor during the purification process. The technology can also be used to polish white liquor to provide higher pulp quality. To provide for a simple and cost-effective installation, the system was designed as a skid-mounted unit that is pre-piped, instrumented, and tested before shipment. The system is modular and allows for easy expansion of capacity. This paper discusses the process design, process integration, and startup of the new system, along with experiences from the first months of operation.
This study addresses the challenges a dissolving-grade pulp mill in Canada faced in 2014 in meeting its total reduced sulfur (TRS) gas emission limit. These emissions from the recovery boiler exit are controlled by passing the boiler exit gas through a TRS scrubber system. The mill employs a cyclonic direct contact evaporator to concentrate black liquor to firing solids content. The off-gases from the direct contact evaporator flow to the effluent gas control system that consists of a venturi scrubber, a packed bed scrubber, and a heat recovery unit. Emissions of TRS greater than the regulated limit of 15 ppm were observed for a 4-month period in 2014. The level of emissions measured during this period was significantly higher than about 12 ppm, the expected average value based on historic experience. The problem persisted from mid-June 2014 until the annual mill shutdown in October 2014. The main TRS components detected and the performance of the Teller scrubber in capturing them are examined. Other potential causes for these emissions are identified, including mechanical problems such as broken packing in the TRS packed bed scrubber, broken baffle plates in the scrubber, and cyclone evaporator leaks causing air ingress. Repairs were carried out during the mill shutdown, which eliminated the TRS emissions problem.
